Summary
In the rain, Stede doesn’t even notice, at first, when lights sweep over him. He doesn’t notice, either, when a car stops next to him; he only notices when he hears the slam of a car door, followed by, “Fucking shit, there you are, Stede— Stede! Stop walking, stop—”
Stede, frowning, obeys the voice, stops, turns, finds Ed in his rain gear with his hood up, striding through the mist and storm to Stede.
“What?” Stede asks, bewildered. He’d almost think he were hallucinating if Ed didn’t take him by the shoulders a beat later, throwing a rain jacket over his head, hauling him bodily towards the car.
“Why didn’t you call me?” Ed demands.

Summary
“They all think you’re ridiculous, and pathetic, poor baby Bonnet and his big bad boyfriend who hates him.” Stede felt himself vibrating with anger. As if he needed someone else to tell him that he wasn’t good enough for Ed.
“Enough!” He snapped, glaring at Nigel and his simpering twin. They ‘ooed’ at him which only incensed him further. He hit the table with an open palm.
The crew all stared at him. His shout rang around the now silent galley. Most of them had hung their heads. Stede was horrified.
Or: Stede's still haunted by the ghosts of Nigel and Chauncey and Ed's started to notice that something's wrong.

Summary
Stede stares at him for a troubling second before he feels his own eyes burn, his own face crumpling, and it hurts, and his heart goes faster, faster, faster, and he doesn’t know how he could have died. There was just— nothing, and absence, and no one, and—
Actually, that’s not true.
Even in all that darkness— even when he must have been dying, or maybe even dead— he saw Ed.
“I still saw you,” Stede says, a breath, a revelation. His eyes leave the middle distance and find Ed’s again. “Ed.”

Summary
Ed says to him, "You should be a stand-up comedian."
Stede blinks back at him. "You think?"
"Eh," Ed shrugs, cocking his head to the side as if he's deep in thought. "Maybe not. You'd meet too many hecklers. You'd hate the hecklers."
"Well, no! No I wouldn't, 'cause you wouldn't be able to hear the hecklers over my sounds."
"What the fuck? What are your sounds?"
Stede screws up his face and starts to make noises unlike anything Ed's ever heard. There are bird warbles and drum beats and some weird whistles that Ed can't even begin to describe. They're funny, though. They pull a laugh from deep inside of him despite the mountain of anxiety it had to overcome to get outside of him. He feels a little lighter, seeing Stede make these ridiculous sounds. It almost gives him hope for the future.
Eventually, when Stede goes a little red in the face, he stops to regain his breath. Ed kisses his nose. "You're right - I wouldn't be able to hear a heckler over that."

Summary
Stede loses all hope of a better life after serving on a “real” pirate ship with his crew after a failed attempt to get back to the Revenge. He’s a changed man with scars and flinches that were never there before, but he's at least a competent sailor and fighter now.
Blackbeard's barely hanging in there, holed up in his cabin more often than not. He's even been banned from going on raids after an incident that left Izzy Hands frantic to come up with one last plan to try to save his captain. When Izzy finds Stede on a raid, he takes him back to the Revenge to try to get Blackbeard back.
Blackbeard hates Stede, but he still wants him, and Stede still wants him too. They come to an agreement that brings them closer together while keeping them bitterly apart. Two broken men muddle through their past experiences and heartbreak, picking up the pieces and slowly coming back to life as they come back to each other (while Izzy and the remaining crew members try to help).

Summary
Ed’s in love with a patient—and if that isn’t the worst kind of luck, he doesn’t know what could be worse.
The man in room 302 has a head of golden curls, sparkling hazel eyes, a dimpled smile—one so bright that Ed dropped his glasses the first time he examined him up close—and a memory more unreadable than a wiped computer.

Summary
Numb, Ed lets Lucius push him from the green room, all his things hastily shoved back into the bag Stede had so lovingly packed for him this afternoon before they came over here.
“Everything you’re going to need,” he’d said, at the time, giving Ed a kiss while he pushed the bag into his hands.
Ed’s eyes burn. The bag doesn’t have a single fucking thing he needs in it. The only thing he needs is Stede; nothing else fucking matters in comparison.
And Stede’s not here.

Summary
The moon shone through the tree canopy, a break in the clouds as rain continued to pour.
A footprint, rust-red against the earth, gleamed.
“Stede, mate,” he said, as he looked up and saw the line of prints disappearing into the trees. “What the absolute fuck.”
(A rainstorm stops Ed from leaving.)
