Summary
It hits him, then, like anaphylaxis is contagious: his chest feels tight, his breath frozen. He’s mad at Jack for getting so exposed. He’s mad at the patient for bringing in the allergen in the first place. He’s terrified, seeing Jack sweat, hearing Javadi read “90 over 70,” and even as Jack’s breathing begins to slow, and even as his systolic starts climbing, Robby is scared stiff.
Jack mumbles something around the mouthpiece of the nebulizer.
“No,” Robby snaps. “Shut up and breathe.”

Summary
Robby follows him as Jack starts working on the coffee, taking a seat at the peninsula that divides the kitchen from the rest of the apartment.
“You still like it burned or have you gotten better taste since last time?” he teases, throwing a quick glance at Robby, who makes a face at him.
They don’t do this often, crashing at each others’ places. Jack honestly can’t remember when exactly that last time was. Close to a year, he thinks, a Pirates game with a rain delay that then went into extra innings. It’s not that they don’t hang out when their schedules allow for it, it’s just that there’s always been more of a distance in their relationship outside work, like somehow the halls (and roof) of PTMC allow for more vulnerability than the halls of their own homes.
“At this point I'll take whatever you give me and I'll like it,” Robby says, definitely with a grimace this time.

Summary
Jack sings along to the music playing over the kitchen speaker, swaying a little. He’s a terrible singer (medically diagnosed by Santos in a scathing review of his late night tunes), but he’s going through an Olivia Dean phase. Sue him.
The late summer sun is streaming through the open kitchen windows, painting everything gold as the breeze carries the sound of birdsong and passing conversation in. Robby is still out with Jake for an afternoon game of basketball, but due back any time.
He blows out a nervous breath, the velvet box in his pocket burning against his thigh.

Or, Jack cooks dinner, remembers, and asks Robby to marry him. In that order.

Summary
Even in this rain, Robby recognized the footsteps behind him, so he didn't turn, just listened to that familiar half swaggering gait approaching him.
He'd never been able to decide if the swagger was more from the prosthetic or from the attitude. Probably a combination. Either way, the effect was the same, and Robby turned after all, to watch as Jack came closer.
Leaning casually against the railing and looking out over the skyline, his breath making plumes in the air that rose up into the curves of Robby's umbrella, Jack said, "So, should I be concerned that everyone is suddenly singing 'Toxic' down there? Did somebody poison the water supply while I wasn't looking?"

“Jack,” Robby whispers, trying to bite back the sobbing whine that actually wants to tear out of him.
Stroking his hair back, his thumb rubbing a circle into Robby’s temple, Jack whispers back, “I’m right here. You’re in good hands, you’re in my hands, babe. I got you.” A rough kiss pushes into Robby’s forehead, and Robby hiccups again. “You fucking— I love you, you— You goddamned idiot.”
“Sorry,” Robby mumbles upwards at him. “Thought it was better this way.”
“Nothing that hurts you is ever better,” Jack insists, with force. “Ever.”

Summary
The leather used to be like armour. Protection against a world out to fucking get him when his own skin felt far too softly vulnerable to leave so delicate and exposed. He relished in everything it stood for back then. Found euphoria in the hyper-masculine status it brought him, and the power that came with it. Willingly let it consume him until it became his whole world, because the one beyond the doors of the bars was never any better.
He built himself a reputation. Blackbeard, the leather daddy Dom.
As Blackbeard, the world could never harm him. As Blackbeard, his own dysphoria could never touch him. As Blackbeard, he knew he was safe.
It’s still true, all these years later, but his leathers are worn with age just like the rest of him, and Ed is so tired of playing pretend.
