On a hot, hot day when her mind should be elsewhere, she can't help herself but be wholly plagued by thoughts of them.
She is angry, which in turn made her even more angry because she didn’t want to be angry—both out of feeling like she wasn’t allowed to be angry at anyone because of sweet, sweet Golden Girl expectations and because she didn’t want to be angry at them—but she was!
And then they look at her, a small but meaningful glance thrown her way and suddenly her anger gets that much more complicated.
And then she finds Kris...stealing their dad's truck??

Nothing matters. “I should’ve–” A noise like a wounded animal. “I knew something was wrong. I left them here, and– and it’s my fault. I should’ve stopped them.”
Carol hears nothing but her heart in her ears. The wind is in her eyes, drying them, she didn’t know they were wet. Endlessly monochrome, before her: the killer.
“Yes,” she says finally. “You should have.”
OR: Two bodies are found in the lake, and a funeral is planned for three. Carol Holiday is left alone.

One week ago, Kris nearly destroyed the world. Seven days ago, they took a stupid, selfish shot in the dark, throwing away all the plans they had so meticulously prepared in favor of one last, desperate gamble. One hundred and sixty-eight hours ago, they finally sealed the shelter’s Dark Fountain for good—and miraculously, thanks only to their friends, nobody had to die.
But more importantly: sixteen hours ago, Susie, apparently, went out with Noelle for an ice cream date and neither of them told Kris about it beforehand.
By all accounts, that should be fine. That should be not a big deal, because Susie and Noelle are girlfriends, and girlfriends go on dates with each other. And, typically, girlfriends aren’t expected to invite regular friends to join in on those dates. Especially not friends who lied to both of them repeatedly and nearly ruined everything, everywhere, forever.
The cruel truth of the matter, though, is that Kris is extremely not fine.

December Holiday had only ever been good at one thing.
The soft strum of her fingers on a guitar. Delicate breezes that flow through a clarinet. Or caressing the ivory keys of her white piano. Music came naturally to her, like how baseball did to Azzy, or choir did to Noelle, or even how being a weird little freak did to Kris.
It sucks to be told you're bad at the only thing you ever thought you were good at.

Summary
Just get up and say something. Kris thought. But what would they say? Susie was on a date right now. Why would they ruin her happiness? I can be a bit selfish, right? Kris looked up again at Susie, the sunset illuminating her features. Her hair shiny in the evening light, her golden eyes brighter as the water shined behind her. But in her arms… was Noelle. Not Kris.
It’s not your place. Kris thought glumly. They pressed their face into the table as the new couple continued to giggle and laugh.
This really fucking sucks.. ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁ ⟡ ݁ . ⊹ ₊ ݁.
When Susie and Noelle become official, Kris closes themselves off to Susie. They just can't control how jealous they are that their crush is with their childhood friend. After Kris and Susie have an argument, Kris unexpectedly leaves for college. Noelle and Susie plan to join Kris in one year. During that time, Kris works on themselves and finds a new home in the city. But when Kris's time is up and Susie and Noelle arrive in the city, Kris isn't so sure they've moved on from Susie completely.

Kris turns back to Susie. Their expression is as apathetic as ever and they remain silent for a long moment before narrowing their eyes into a piercing glare.
“I’m not your first priority anymore,” they say. “Why should you be mine?”
Susie stiffens like a board. Noelle can feel the fur on the back of her neck standing on end, burning with guilt even when she doesn’t know what she could have possibly done wrong.
Kris has been acting weird ever since Susie and Noelle started dating. Noelle finds something she wasn't supposed to.

Summary
Kris looks out across the lake. The air is light, with the trees swaying in rhythms they don’t recognise. They, briefly, feel the temptation of dipping their fingers into the water, sinking their arm further into what lurks below. As much as they don’t give in to said temptation, they still tilt their head down, facing their reflection and looking back as if it gave them the idea in the first place.
The beach, then, grows quieter.
When the SOUL gets a chance to talk to Kris through their reflection in the lake, it sets some things straight.

Summary
The Angel always knew that this day would come. Banishment has always been an inevitability, so there is no reason to feel bad about it happening now. After a harrowing battle against the Knight, the Angel realizes that they are unwanted within this story. They have already been taught many times that at some point, it is time to let go of a world. This is how it must be. If Kris does not want them, then it must be time. After all, if their vessel does not want them, isn't the only winning move not to play?
With the Angel disconnected, Kris and Susie descend into a Dark World without knowing what fate has just befallen the world. The light that shines the way is gone, and not a single person knows why. The world moves on anyway while Kris, Susie, and Ralsei are all caught in the aftermath of the Angel's swift decision. Even with the light no longer shining brightly, maybe something can be salvaged from the dark.
