A fic exploring the dark side of their codependent relationship and Matt's overcontrolling inability to let Jay branch out vs Jay's desire to do other things. The fic is not meant to be anti-Matt! But he does do things here, like in the show, that are not particularly Morally Great. Jay's also not perfect but honestly his ability to do harm here is pretty limited by circumstance if nothing else. -

Summary
Billy showing up was shitty icing on the already shitty cake.
Steve hadn't been too bothered by it until Billy had caught sight of the kids in the window and any illusion he'd had of quickly getting rid of the man went straight out the window, pun intended.
He'd expected a fight, for it to get bad.
What he's not expecting is to get a hard shove onto Billy, sending him careening backwards right into the Byers fridge.
Unfortunately the heat of the moment causes Steve to be on a one-track mind, total tunnel vision as he belatedly realizes something incredibly, terribly important.
It's the fridge with a dead demo-dog inside of it.

"Steve?" Jonathan is half out of the ambulance, using all of his weakened strength to keep Steve upright. "What's wrong?"

Jay and Evie are caught up and raised as good, productive citizens. Carlos and Mal? Let's just say they were overlooked. 16 years later he tries to rectify that mistake by catching and bringing them over, which doesn't go well. They're anxious, aggressive, and in no mood to play nice. In a last ditch effort, he tries assigning them partners to help them get used to the idea of being good. Or in Carlos' case, get him out from under the bed. As far as Mal is concerned? Oh, my, how Auradon will burn.
