“How… long?” Dream asked, forcing his voice to remain steady. “Aren’t you — supposed to be in Pandora? What if —“
Sam took a step forward, and Dream broke off, shrinking back, hating how he was shrinking back. “Pandora’s Vault is compromised, thanks to your nonsense,” Sam growled. “For the time being, you will remain here, and you will behave, or there will be consequences.”
or,
After Technoblade’s escape from Pandora, Sam decides that his prisoner is no longer secure in the Vault, and drags him off to his remote island, determined to keep him there, whatever the cost.

“Techno asked me to make sure you didn’t run off or get killed while he hibernated,” Phil said lightly, tossing another log into the fire. “So, here we are.”
Dream exhaled. He was braced against the doorway, and even from several paces away Phil could see him shaking. “Why do you care?”
“I don’t,” Phil said, pulling himself upright again and refolding his wings behind him. “Let’s make that very, very clear: I do not care about you. But I do care about Techno, and he wanted me to make sure you’d still be here when he woke up. So — did you eat something today?”

Summary
Dream released his palm. Some of the pain in Phil’s hand lessened. Dream’s fingers were dripping red with blood, and his expression was somewhere on the edge of dread. “Techno!” he shouted, his voice cracking, and the unexpectedly raised tone made Phi jerk back a bit. “Techno!”
There was a muffled bang, a voice from somewhere above them, and then thundering footsteps, before Techno burst into the room, sword in hand, glasses askew.
“Heh? What’s — what’s goin’ on?” Techno demanded, turning in a hurried circle before focusing in on Dream. “What’s wrong?”
“Phil’s reacting to my pain,” Dream said flatly.

Summary
Sam did not like to be disobeyed.
Moreover, Sam did not like to be humiliated.
So when Dream somehow managed to do both of those things—in less than a blink of the eye, no less—Sam didn’t think it an overreaction to use a potion or two in retaliation. Or a few more after that. Or even more then. It was necessary, was what he told himself. Dream needed to be subdued, or else Dream would keep on scheming, trying to escape again. It was all necessary.
Sam was no Quackity. He never did anything beyond what was reasonable.
This, all of this, was necessary.
(and after all, it wasn’t like his prisoner was in any state to complain.)

Summary
Maybe it's the inherent hopelessness of his real loves and desires being torn to pieces for the entertainment value. Maybe it's because nobody could even bother to pat him on the shoulder for something as small and inconsequential as his frog dying (though it was a frog that "nobody knew or cared about," as Grian so helpfully pointed out about three times in the following hours). It's probably some horrific cocktail of both that's bringing his mood down into that dreaded sluggishness.
Some more emotionally savvy members of the group might dub his experience with a fun and formal name to really hammer the nail into the coffin parading around the fact that he is stupid and wrong, but for Grian, it is simply deemed as being "down in the dumps."
[or: jimmy is inordinately upset about the death of his frog. expectedly, there's a lot more to unpack there.]

Summary
If someone had broken Techno’s window, he might’ve forgiven them, provided they had a good reason.
If someone had hijacked his house, he probably would’ve stabbed them.
If that same somebody had decided that his mattress was going to become their deathbed, sure, why not? Who was he, in the infinite whims of the universe, to stop them from bleeding out all over his floorboards?
…but of all the ungodly hours, why did it have to be 2am?
