Roy’s hands land on her shoulders. He’s so close to her all of a sudden, his eyes wide and lips trembling as he lingers on every possible detail of her face, until an unguardedly sweet smile finally spreads across his features. “You are so beautiful,” he says, his forehead dipping close to hers as he sways on his feet. “I thought I’d never see you again, Lieutenant.”

Even Jonny knows better than to push Nastya when she doesn’t want to talk, though he still tries if he doesn’t mind being blown to bits for his trouble, but Brian just presses his lips together and starts trying to guide her in the direction of his pod. “It appears that you haven’t slept in several days, and your usual… pallor is even greyer than normal. If you’re not willing to confide in Aurora about whatever’s upsetting you, then you need someone else to talk to, yes?”

Jonny gawks at him, splutters, then yanks his hand back and crosses his arms over his chest. “I mean—when I was a kid, probably! I don’t know! I don’t—usually I just get, like, soft and fuzzy at worst, not like this, and I don’t understand why that’s so funny.”

The body inside the airlock isn’t Carmilla or Nastya, nor is it Ivy or Ashes or even the weird singing mannequin that keeps showing up uninvited. It’s a man, haphazardly strapped into something halfway between a life pod and a coffin, and as Jonny’s feet carry him forward of their own accord, he soaks in the few details visible through the tiny porthole.

The rules are as follows:
1. Aurora will turn off all her internal sensors—she can't see, hear, or touch what's inside her hallways, except for what she touches with her cables.
2. Aurora can only close one door at a time, and can only use cables in one section of the ship at a time.
3. Aurora has two hours to find and capture Nastya before turning her sensors back on.
4. If Aurora finds Nastya before then, she gets to do whatever she wants to her.
5. If Nastya makes it two hours without getting caught, Aurora's sensors stay off, and Nastya gets to do whatever she wants to her. -

His heart is racing in a way that he hasn’t felt since he was still—flesh. Not human. He’s still human. The pain in his chest is as real as it was when he was entirely biological, as he reminds himself over and over again.

“We have approximately fifteen minutes before the Aurora’s safety is compromised,” Ivy informs him. Her voice is shaking. When Marius turns back to look at her, she’s wrapped up in Raphaella’s wings as if they could begin to protect her from what’s coming.
Shaking off the fear of impending doom, Marius reaches through the hole in the door to open it from the other side. “We’re fast, and they’re distracted. It’ll be fine.”
