    Summary

Good riddance, he thinks. Or maybe feels obligated to think. He’s not sure. It feels like a natural thing to think about a brother who hit you and insulted you and extorted you for most of your short, miserable time together. He’s thought about it before, Alexei dying. The life he lived had not been conductive to longevity.

I am the last Rozanov, he thinks, and that is an emotion he can parse, finally: closure. Like setting the last piece down in a puzzle.

It’s only after the first puff of smoke escapes his lips that Ilya remembers Alexei’s daughter.

    Or:
Two years after he gets married, Ilya Rozanov receives the news that his older brother has died.

    Summary

His stomach takes a sharp, screeching left. His heart stalls and then shifts into gear, zero to 180, every tired tract of him seizing and squealing to go, run, leave.

“Hey, I found him,” Tony says, finishing a conversation Ilya wasn’t in, easy like all conversations without Ilya are. Easy like the world isn’t ending. Like Ilya isn’t standing there, wishing every time he tried to self-destruct or kill himself had worked.

Greasy black hair. Sallow freckled skin. A turned head and horror-widened eyes taking in the big bad monster who finally arrived onscreen.

“Shane, Ilya; Ilya, Shane,” Tony says, totally oblivious. “You both like hockey, right? So that’s something in common. I’ve got to take lunch, but I’ll check in on you both before my shift is over.”

Nobody knows if Ilya Rozanov tried to kill himself before the draft. Nobody sane goes first overall. And nobody knows if Shane Hollander is going to survive another mediocre season with the Boston Raiders.

Isn’t it funny how a single nick in the ice can change the entire game?

    Summary

When Shane Hollander wakes up in a world that never invented hockey, the only other person who remembers is Ilya Rozanov.

    Summary

On very bad nights, Lyosha lets himself look. He pulls up KHL scores, reads articles about Dynamo’s powerplay. After a while, he wanders into articles about ex-KHL players who play for the MLH now. He’s a Dynamo diehard, of course, and prefers the KHL, but he’s a casual Valery Garipov fan, and it would not be a surprise to anyone that he occasionally keeps tabs on how the Puffins are doing. It would not be a red flag, to anyone watching.

The Puffins are not doing so well, as it happens. Not like another team, that leads the league and dominates conversations, to the point that even articles about the Puffins can’t help talking about them. To the point that sometimes, sometimes, there are even stray pictures. Nothing that Lyosha will ever linger on. He is his father’s son. He lives in Moscow. He has a daughter who is fifteen.
