Summary
It was a joke when Scott first brought it up; probably at the expense of the people who didn’t understand their relationship. Someone who seemed confused by Shelby and Scott’s superficial resemblance to one another, perhaps, but who wasn’t brave enough to ask for clarification. If Scott seemed at all pensive afterwards, well, they weren’t paying enough attention to notice.
The second time he mentioned it, it was less of a joke. He sat her down on the couch in the living room and explained how it would make their lives easier – legally and socially – and in the unthinkable case that something happened to him, Shelby would inherit.
“So, Shelby,” he said in that wheedling tone he used when he wanted her to give him something. “What do you think of getting married?”

Cleo asked, still in the same drawl— but she seemed to sense she had touched upon something bloody and wounded, because she ceased her casual lean, and instead stood straight and wary, putting the corner of the table between herself and Owen for all the good it would do her. "You cook, you clean, you take care of the fledglings while Scott fucks off and tries to charm the town—"
"Shut your mouth," Owen said, louder, his anger returning and with it his ability to move. "What are you talking about, have you gone mad?"
"Have I gone mad?" Cleo barked out a laugh, patronizing and delighted—
And Owen did go after them this time, with a shout of fury.

Gem takes her hand and walks her back home, while Pearl tries and fails to push down the lightning. She should know better by now, but she can’t help but fight it. It’s probably only making her more angry. “We can pick back up tomorrow,” Gem suggests. “I love you, Pearl, you know that, right? You mean the world to me. I’m so glad we’re in this together, or I don’t know what I’d do.”
The anger is taking up all the space in her brain, crowding out the coherent thoughts and leaving her with nothing but the urge to hide. Pearl’s a crier, of course, what else would she be? Gem gets to flip out when she’s mad, but Pearl has to sob and run away. It’s not fair. She can feel the tears coming, and she can’t stop them, so she lets them fall.
“You’ll be fine,” Gem promises, lingering in the doorway to the house Pearl shares with a few others. “It’ll pass. Just remember we’re still friends, Pearl. We’re all we have.”
For now, at least, this is the inarguable truth. Gem is the one that taught Pearl everything she knows about this world, and Pearl will never stop owing her.

Pearl and Gem develop sentience together in a happy dream world that slowly starts to unravel at the seams.

And two: He's still not back.
Following in the steps of his love, Louis finds nothing but an abandoned settlement and the remains left behind by the expedition and he has to ask himself one question:
How far would Owen go to cure him?
This is an epistolary-styled, found media narrative, where no characters begin as vampires.
