But Crowley had seen the way he glanced back immediately, studying him for a moment, and it wasn’t hard to guess why: Crowley was looking back at him, surprised, astonished by that invitation, so open and earnest.He shrugged, composing himself, doing his best to not make his emotions show so openly. He, too, opted to drink from his cup, hiding a slight smirk, then shrugged.
“Why not?”

After the worms, the tunnels and everything else, Tim and Martin don't really have anyone else to cling to if not each other, and oh they cling so desperately to the only other person who hasn't left, or has not fucked up completely.
It brings out the best and the worst of them, all at once, and it makes for confusing and conflicting feelings, that they can't escape from, not even in the middle of a hook up.

“Because it’s just a game, and it’s going to hurt us” Tim was so close, Martin could feel his breath on his lips, and not closing the distance was starting to drive him a bit insane. But he also knew how to wait, if he had to.“It’s not a game for me” admitted Martin, not having anything else to say. For once, he was honest. Not shy, not a liar or anything else he could be. Just, honest.

In doing so, Grace realizes he has never quite felt romantic love, and has a long-overdue realization. Tears ensue, and Rocky is there to reassure him, and also to be the first alien to hear the awaited conclusion:

Summary
After Stanley successfully escapes the parable with the Narrator, he finds himself alone in the real world without his only friend. Half a decade passes and Stanley is now a lead editor and writer for a book focused news outlet when his workmate and friend, Tom, recommends him a book that leads him to reminisce of his time in the parable. Stanley, now with a new favorite book, gets the opportunity to interview its mysterious author, Nigel Salt, through a series of emails which soon leads the two to become pen pals and maybe even friends. Stanley only hopes his relationship with Nigel will fill the hole in his heart from losing the Narrator.
