Shen Wei senses Zhao Yunlan’s inhale before he hears his sigh, before he feels Zhao Yunlan move, and Shen Wei silently shifts his leg away as Zhao Yunlan stretches forward to pick up another case file. If Zhao Yunlan looks over at him, Shen Wei keeps his gaze trained on the file in his hands and doesn’t see it.
“Cause of death records,” Zhao Yunlan says as he flips the case file open, the same way he’d said acid composition notes for the last one, and trident wound autopsies for the one before that. Shen Wei hears him tuck his lollipop into his cheek, the click of it against his teeth. “It’s from ten years ago, I’m surprised it was allowed to lapse. My old man would’ve still been in charge then.”
Or: A week after Shen Wei restores Zhao Yunlan's eyesight, the SID uncovers a new lead to an old case.

12/20/2025 - loved this. these small pieces: the paper, spock's hedonism, spock's dyslexia, spirk being a little bit in each others' minds, aperol spritz + olives, spock's spit, gespar fruit. its such a cohesive set of things that are used and mentioned just a couple ways each in a way that feels like it gives such a strong clear structure to the story. also it was funny, i love the spock voice and the jim voice in this, the way they needle each other and do things to get at the other person and then we find out when we switch povs that they were right. i feel like i don't often see that done as a "proof of knowing/intimacy" but i really like it.
