It was enough to have killed Paris, before it wasn’t. In Paris, Mark watched humans wither as down came the Eiffel Tower and smoke filled Versailles. He hovered in a mad, red, and suffocating sky and ground his teeth into dust, and thought about the boundless span of this Invincible’s life suddenly withdrawing into a pinhole. He breathed fire, and it was good.
After the wasteland and the wreckage of titanium plates from which he scavenged William, it was enough to be close to him. It was everything. First there was his voice in Mark’s childhood room; dispersed through white silt; and then: his voice, his voice, his voice for real, keening for Invincible—
After escaping the wasteland, Maskless Mark gets a second chance with William. Unfortunately, something always gets in the way.

Summary
It makes sense, of course— in everything, there is its opposite. In the waste of his Earth, there was his mother, his father, even William and Eve— before they each decided in their own ways to put their necks to the chopping block. In the glory of the Viltrum empire, there is a huge, aching hollow that conducts rage and electricity through him. On every billboard screen are a few dead pixels where his face skews as it looms over him, parroting back his own voice, his own insipid, juvenile, bullshit dogma. In his father’s truth was Mark’s truth, the real truth.
Over the three days of the Invincible War, Target Mark goes sliding down the drain.

Mark hears this is what it’s like for addicts. Weaning themselves on and off and on again. He’s considered asking the prisoner, but he won’t risk the humiliation waiting to happen. Mark isn’t addicted. It’s not the coke, or the miasma of Everclear and bullshit Mark let Rex keep in his minifridge, or the home movies, or even the red red blood. There’s no particular thing he needs but to be kept from going still. Going quiet. Anything that keeps him moving, that’s his vice of choice, though the glimmer of his face over a dark screen in the pitch, promising underworld of night— the door to the office locked and double-bolted, but still, somewhere beneath him, fourth floor, unit A, somewhere around there:
a man to which inertia does not apply and all the laws of reality and physics cower from— there, a man to which all men sink towards or sprint from— the kind of guy who has never, ever known what it’s like to stay still, because lying in wait doesn’t count—
Certainly make it easier.
Target is the building manager of the apartments where the variants live; Sinister is the serial killer dragging down the property value. Hijinks ensue. Let's call them hijinks.

Eddie is a med student; Bill, a commerce dropout with interests in writing, painting, and supporting his brother's pursuits in music. Bev and Ben go to Harvard. The Bowers gang are either working at or around Neibolt, with the exceptions of Peter, who is a social media influencer, Patrick, an anthropology + sociology student, and Moose, an apprentice. Most of the missing kids work at Neibolt. Everyone's alive, and the OT7 is real. (stenbrough + reddie-dominant with benverly + handon featuring, as well as future stanlonbrough.)

The threat of someone being in his bedroom dissipates immediately, but, the dream still feels vaguely real, clinging to his pyjamas as he pulls the blanket back. There’s an irking in his brain that something is wrong and he has to check the apartment.
His tired feet find his slippers with a sigh and Leon makes his way to the door to peek his head through the frame.
His heart drops noticing there is indeed someone in the living room.
