The words hit Mike like a punch to the gut. Troy and James burst into laughter again, but Mike barely heard them. Beside him, Will seemed to shrink into himself, shoulders curling inward as he stared at the pavement. The scent of fear in his pheromones grew stronger.
Something hot and angry twisted in Mike's chest.
His fists clenched at his sides. He could feel his fangs prickling. It was a new sensation, Mike realized, but it was strong. Painfully strong. A dull ache settled in his teeth, and all he wanted was to sink them into something.

"Signs?!" Mike cut him, exasperated. "Will, I've been dating Jane all summer, she just broke up with me today. What are you talking about?!"

When they finally manged to get out, they waved goodbye to Lucas and Dustin, who were biking home. Him and Will never biked home, at least Will haven't. Mike couldn't understand why, but someone always hat to pick Will from school — whether it was his parents, or Mikes, who never picked him up when Will was sick or simply not at school. Mike remembers asking this very question one evening at the dinner table. His dad got annoyed pretty fast and told him " C'mon Mike, you're big enough now, you should know better than to ask these stupid questions." When he asked his mom the next day, she simply told him Will "needs more protection than him". Which was a stupid response, his friend was just as capable as him, but a small part inside him was glad. Glad that Will was safe and protected.
