Missing scene from the book of Rocky finding out how old Grace is, from Rocky’s perspective.
Grace has mentioned that he is a scientist as well as a teacher to human children. On Erid, only our Elders would step down from their purpose to impart their knowledge on the next generation. Grace must be very old indeed to become a teacher, and to be chosen for this mission.

When they got to Erid, Rocky’s Human was… worse for wear. He was ragged and diseased and stumbling over his own two feet (another benefit of having five). Rocky carefully led him to his new home, chattering away about how much Grace would love the Eridians’ creation. Perhaps he’d love it even more than his Earth home! Grace only smiled feebly and collapsed into bed, then he was out.
Rocky settled at the foot of his bed, between Grace’s legs, and watched.
Grace slept for a long time, well into the next day. Rocky didn’t leave for even a second, only staring staring staring at his Human. That night, when Grace finally stirred, his rumbling voice asked for a bath.

It is the correct choice. The most benefit for the least cost. Elegance-In-Motion will simply wake up on Erid, belly full of proper nutrients, body healed from adventures in space.
The problem is that they both really, really, really don't want to.

Summary
Rocky visits Grace's life support quarters with some exciting news, some time into his recovery on Erid---the biodome habitat has finally been completed.
It takes a step through the airlock and sinks down into rough sand and pebbles. I chirp and hop down after it. Grace has not seen the biodome yet, but neither have I, and in my enthusiasm I dart slightly ahead.
Grace inhales so sharply that I turn to hear him better in a panic. “Grace? Grace, what is wrong? You are hurt?”
My assumption is quickly corrected when, without warning, it bolts.

"Plan is to use human thinking machine to find out vitamins and minerals Grace is currently missing. When Grace had human food, Grace wasn’t sick. When Grace was had coma slurry, as Grace called it, Grace was hungry but not sick. When Grace only has taumoeba, Grace sick.
Need substitute for taumoeba. No good for Grace.
Rocky tried to make Grace food before, but apparently Rocky uses too many heavy metals. Would kill Grace. Bad bad bad.
So Rocky need to search ship. Search everywhere. In walls. In ports. In everywhere."

When I slowly open my end of the frequency, I barely trust my own primary sense. I’ve never not trusted what I hear, until now. Now, I sing back, but I don’t let any hope in it. It’s lower than usual. “…Grace, question?”

“So, I was thinking about why I’ve been throwing up. I think some of it is the actual, physical properties of the taumoeba, but I honestly think half the battle is the taste. See, humans use smell and taste to tell us if food is going to make us sick, like it’s moldy or smells weird, that sends a signal for disgust to our brains to stop us from eating it, and that triggers nausea.”
“I feel this way about all human food,” I say, and Grace rolls its eyes.
“Sure. But I think my brain is being overprotective about the taumoeba. It’s the same reason why human kids get picky or people throw up during pregnancy, even when the food they’re eating is perfectly edible. My brain is signalling to me that I shouldn’t want it in my body, mostly because -- well, I don’t. It smells like mildew and algae and has the texture of chia seed pudding that was forgotten at the back of a fridge. But that’s making me nauseous when I even think about putting it in my mouth, which makes me more likely to throw up.”
“But how would you eat without using your mouth?” I ask.
Grace grins at me. “That, my friend, is exactly the question I’ve been asking myself. And I think the answer might be something called a nasogastric tube."
