Jax wakes up after a long, long time, a bit the worse for wear.
On the one hand, she experienced ego death, is tired and hurting all the time, and cries like a faucet now.
On the other, she's too exhausted to bother with her old bluster, has accepted that she wasn't subtle at all about her gender woes, and is genuinely galaxies happier than she used to be.
But even so...an old question begins to nag at her.

Whether it replaces mortality with chrome or morality with apathy, NC takes and never gives. She's the lowest of the low- a Scav, part of the one gang in Night City that everyone agrees is the worst of them. In a group already solely consisting of bottom-feeders and scum-suckers, she's the lowest on the totem pole. But somebody once said that once you've hit rock bottom, the only way to go is up. Even if the idiot who said that line probably got flatlined in minutes, Mel can't help but hope that she won't fall screaming off the edge like every other hopeful.
