It had been their promise, to only die by the other’s hand, but Zanka was a coward. He hadn’t wanted to comply with said promise, hadn’t wanted to be the one to end Jabber’s life. He had wanted the two of them to grow up together, to finish this stupid war together, to figure out adulthood together; where they would go, what they would do, how they would function— he wanted to figure out each step with Jabber by his side.

Shane continues to shake his head.
“Oh, Shane,” Ilya says, pulling him into his arms. “You have to have blood, no?”
“It kills people. Don’t you care?”
“No,” Ilya says, surprised that it’s not a lie.
