Summary
Ames is in his workshop, as usual, when Rhei arrives. He spends most of his days there, working either on the commissions that pay for his materials or the personal projects he’s slowly testing and working closer to completion. His focus is, therefore, on carving delicate model ships, and not on the potential presence of another person.
It is only once Ames puts his work down and turns from his work table that he realises Rhei is present. He’s the one with wings; they’re the one who seems to fly as they jump, laughing, into his arms.
This, too, is normal.

Later, however (and to Matty's eternal annoyance), he would thank her for her thoughtfulness and generosity: "Benny really has changed our lives for the better."
