    Summary

Lieutenant Commander Evan Buckley has survived war zones, covert missions, and enough explosions to fill a lifetime—but nothing prepared him for Staff Sergeant Eddie Diaz, the army medic with a sharp tongue and zero regard for rank.

They clash, they fight, they bleed—and somewhere between they start to fall. Slowly. Stupidly. Against all odds. Because in a world where every second counts, love is the one thing they never trained for.

Sergeant Eddie Diaz didn’t look up until he heard boots and yelling.

“Careful!” he said, deadpan, as the team deposited Buck—still resisting—onto the cot. “We wouldn’t want to bruise his ego any further.”

“You’re the medic?” Buck growled, glaring up at the man with messy curls and sharp eyes.

“No,” Eddie replied dryly, pulling on gloves. “I’m the fairy godmother. You got a wish?”

    Summary

The kid claps a hand over his mouth. His eyes are huge and sparkling with something that looks like excitement or mischief, probably both.

"Sorry, sorry," he whispers loudly. Then he leans forward, like he's about to share a secret. "You're a hunk, right?"

Buck chokes on nothing. "I. What?"

"A hunk," the kid repeats. "You know, a hunk."

"I..." Buck has no idea what's happening. "Sure? I guess? I mean, I've been told... I work out sometimes—"

"Perfect!" The kid is already digging around in his backpack. He pulls out a slightly crumpled rectangle of cardstock and presents it to Buck with great ceremony. "This is for you."

It's a handmade card written in crayon, blue crayon. The handwriting is careful but wobbly, the letters all different sizes.

    Summary

“Hey Chim,” he starts, sidling up to Chimney one morning at the fire station, “have you noticed something weird about Buck’s socks?” Eddie takes a sip of his coffee before looking over to the man next to him.

Chimney looks at him as if he’s grown another head.

“His socks?” he asks in bewilderment.

Eddie nods. “His socks.” He doesn’t elaborate further.

“Well…he wears them. Like all the time. But that’s not that weird?” Chim says, still clearly not sure what Eddie wants from him.

“You haven’t noticed…anything else?” Eddie takes another sip of coffee from his mug. He’s not going to give anything away—he wants to see if anyone else has noticed what he thinks he’s noticed, completely on their own, with no outside influence.

“...No?” Chimney replies, almost as if it’s a question. “I really don’t make a habit of looking at Buck’s feet, man.”

or; Buck has something particular going on with his socks. Instead of asking him about it, Eddie decides to do a little experiment.

    Summary

There’s nothing quite like the thrill of your blades cutting across fresh ice. The sound, and the smell, and the feeling in your chest as you breathe it all in.

For Buck, the ice is his safe place. When you grow up in a haunted house you’ll find yourself searching for a home anywhere, and Buck found it here: the echoing silence of an empty rink, the chill in the air, the peace that settles over him as he glides across the ice. He found a home in hockey. He found himself in hockey. And he won’t let anyone take that from him.

    Not even Eddie Diaz.

(Or the hockey AU no one asked for.)
