    Summary

The person sighs softly. “It's a long story. You might want to sit back down,” they say.

Jason narrows his eyes suspiciously. “I'm fine, thanks.”

The stranger rolls their eyes. “Okay, yeah. That tracks. So, I'm from the future,” they explain like that's a completely normal thing to say. “I got sent into the past by an interdimensional being that feeds off of temporal energy, and no magic or technology can bring me back. They’re kind of like the weeping angels from Doctor Who, but they look completely different. They look sort of like hairless blue Klingons with four giant tentacles for legs.”

    Jason barks out a laugh.

Twenty-one-year-old Tim gets stuck permanently five years in the past, right before Jason reveals himself to Bruce as alive, and decides that, since they can't return to their time anyway, they might as well make a couple of changes to their new timeline. But Jason is the only one who knows their identity, and it doesn't take long for them to realize that hiding their identity from their family comes with a few challenges.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Read 18~ chapters. I have some feelings about the gender stuff that I’m not sure if it’s internal bias.

Tim is said to be nonbinary which I know is a wide spectrum but… Tim says they don’t feel like a girl and I get that. They are definitely written as more femme than masc- which is totally cool, it’s a spectrum! My hangup is that to me Tim here feels like they’re written as a girl. And yeah what does that even mean? Who am I to decide what this fan depiction of a fictional character feels about their identity is true or not? Do I feel like Tim needs to do some masc gender expression every now and then to “keep their foot in the door” and count as truly nonbinary?? Sounds kinda messed up of me.

Besides, how can I judge when I’m agender AFAB, not nonbinary AMAB. Those are wildly different experiences. “Androgynous” clothes nowadays are basically just shapeless menswear. And the kinds of clothes I can acceptably wear without people questioning my gender is much wider than someone assigned male. I also, being agender, don’t feel such a heavy need to be identified as nonbinary. I’m not motivated by a dislike of being misgendered to signal my correct gender. I don’t have a gender.

And now I’m thinking about how much gender expression is self expression and how much is societal signaling. Just because the social signals I’m getting from Tim here point to one binary gender doesn’t mean that’s what they feel. They can just have more femme tastes and aesthetics and that doesn’t have to have anything to do with their gender. Just like how a Cis man could enjoy wearing skirts.

I think my discomfort is that I don’t understand gender euphoria. The only time I ever feel dysphoria at all is when I imagine feeling some kind of gender- the idea makes me want to vomit. Which is a problem because trans stories is all about feeling gender. Identifying with a trans character going through transition or struggling with their identity means feeling their gender struggles and triumphs along with them. Which is antithesis to my comfort as an agender person. Like I know trans covers nonbinary, but I think it’s a Venn diagram. Because some nonbinary stories don’t bother me when it’s about signaling you’re not either. I’m also not either. But I am also not something. I’m not both. I’m not some third in between gender.

Okay I think I get it now. I’m comfortable when a nonbinary character expresses themselves in a way to separate from both binary genders. I’m uncomfortable when they express themselves to connect to a different gender. And in my mind the trans story and experience is about longing to engage in a type of gender, while nonbinary story and experience is about longing to escape the binary genders. So this would be a trans story because Tim is longing to express and interact with a nonbinary gender.

Am I transphobic if I find the idea of seeking out any gender to be repulsive? It’s just not for me. I guess it’s like how a super straight dude could gag at the thought of sucking dick but be super happy for his gay friend? Like I think that’s super gross but good for you. Or like if I think idk strawberries are disgusting and I can’t stand even smelling them but that wouldn’t mean I hate everyone who likes strawberries or calls them unnatural or something.

    Summary

He opens his eyes, and stares up at the canopy of the four poster bed he's in. It takes a second, his vision is a bit blurry, but it clears up quick enough.

    Two seconds.

    Three seconds.

    Four seconds.

Part of Jason keeps the count going, while the rest of him kind of just...seizes. Because he knows this canopy. He knows the the posts it's attached to. He—fuck—he knows the notch in the bottom left post he'd put in it when he'd stolen one of Bruce's batarangs when he was twelve and thrown it around like the stupid kid he'd been.

    This was Jason's room.

Or, the one where Jason gets zapped with magic, wakes up in his teenage body, and decides to let the timeline know exactly how fucked it is. He also becomes the president of the Tim Drake Appreciation Club.
