Summary
Will's rules came from a history of mistreatment. When he had gotten to college, he decided that was no longer going to be his life. He was no longer going to let people walk over him or dictate what his image was. That was his job. He had taken the power back, cultivating an image of perfection. Creating a life around his own pleasure, what he wanted to do without taking into consideration what other people felt about it like he had done his entire childhood.
Or, Will Byers is a college primadonna. With a roster of rotating men to please him and buy him anything he wants, he has no room in his life for someone who brings nothing to the table. Mike Wheeler brings nothing to the table.
Will still makes room in his life for him.

Summary
Will Byers disappeared into the Upside Down for the second time during the Battle of Starcourt in 1985. Two years later, Mike Wheeler is still in denial that his best friend could be dead and pours everything he has into planning the crawls, trying to find both Vecna and any evidence of Will.

Will snorts, feeling sleepier than he ever has. “Maybe,” he slurs.
Mike’s rhythm falters for a moment before continuing. “You should… take more breaks, you know,” he mumbles. “I mean, with all that and everything else you take care of.” He lets out a huff. “Just like, it’s no harm to take time off.”
Will grumbles into the couch. “No time to care.”
Mike’s hands soothe down the sides of Will’s waist and it takes all his strength not to shiver, though he’s sure the goosebumps are visible. “That’s not healthy. You know it.”

Mike Wheeler starts working with Max at a salon and becomes a masseuse. Will might take advantage of this more than he should.

The man seizes the handshake, it’s firm, and conceals the money in his jacket with expertise. This ceremony has been practised and perfected; naive eyes wouldn’t catch it.
Ted holds open the door to the cryptic bar, following in after the mysterious man.
What the fuck just happened? Did he see that correctly? Mike rubs his eyes and gazes at the bar again as if it would give him clarity. “Shit,” he curses. That was definitely real. And that was definitely not an affair or a business meeting. That was something shady, something sinister. It isn’t supposed to be something Mike should know about. This was a devious secret Ted kept wrapped behind his ordinary shopfront.

Summary
Will Byers is familiar with the short end of the stick. It’s what sent him on a cross-country hitch-hike from California to New York City with 500 dollars that he scratched together, a backpack with nothing but what’s important, bruises on his face, and an address that hosts the brother he’s had no contact with for nearly four years.
The short end of the stick is what has him desperate to start over and forget. Forget about the abuse, the seizures, and the burden of his childhood. It’s what guides him to one Nancy Wheeler, who lands him a job in a field he never considered an option: corporate.
But as Will starts from scratch, he realizes how much his past really weighs on him, especially after he catches the eye of Mike Wheeler.
Will Byers is not used to love, kindness, or wealth. But maybe he can be. He just needs to take it one step at a time.
