Summary
Dick knew about Donna's daydreams about him walking away. And maybe in his darkest moments, Dick has a few of his own. But now, as he and Donna board the plane to travel across the world, he wonders if he will ever make it back. This isn't how either of them expected it to go, but maybe that's the silver lining to the otherwise dark situation.
Aka... It didn't take his death to finally make Dick walk away from Gotham, but he might not be able to say the same in a year.
The cure was still early stages of development, considered experimental at best. The Bats were the least of their concerns. Dick knows things will never be the same, assuming he lives at all.

MONDAY“I’m just saying, if ghosts were real, they wouldn’t be hanging out in Hawkins!” Robin argued, feet swinging just above the ground from her perch on the counter they were supposed to keep clean to prep toppings for the ice cream, but three days after training ended, Steve had elected to stop caring about things like that.
He shook his head as he muscled out a scoop from a fresh (freezer-burnt) tub of sorbet. “You are so incredibly wrong it’s not even funny.”
Robin sighed in a way that Steve knew meant she was rolling her eyes, feet tapping an even staccato rhythm against the cabinets as she gently kicked back-and-forth. “No, I am absolutely right. If what you said about ghosts only being formed by super-traumatic deaths is true, then there’s literally no possible way that ghosts hang out in Hawkins.”
Steve couldn’t help but snort. The irony was not lost on him, for once.

Or, a lab experiment escapes during the massacre at Hawkins Lab. He goes on to live a completely normal life as Steve Harrington... until he doesn't.

Three shots ring out.
Steve hears them before he feels them; a warm, wet pain burning in his torso, intolerably excruciating.
There’s a bundle of squawks and screams, outbursts of panic and anger, and it’s only when Hopper falls forwards to take Steve up into a slightly rough, protective hold, does he realize that two of those shots have lodged themselves in his own flesh and bone. (Realizes that he’d moved, instinctively, to shield El, despite never having spoken to her, who’d the gun had been so precisely pointed at, aimed for.)
Steve Harrington watches his own blood pool and trickle over a series of hands pressed against him, small and large, soft and rugged, and for a moment, wants to stay like this. He can’t.

Summary
A month has passed since the Gate closed, and the only thing Steve cares about is that the kids are happy and safe.
Steve does not care about his grades slipping, fear accompanying him every waking hour, and Billy trying to become friends with him. He doesn't care, he really doesn't. Until he does, and the world comes crashing down.
This fic is basically a mix of MumSteve, mental consequences of fighting monsters, and slowburn Billy flirting and Steve being too confused to notice

Follow up to Sleep Tight, don't let the Demodogs bite. However, you can read this without reading the other fic.
