Then Aerion opened his eyes in the middle of the song, and it was as if something invisible pulled his attention directly toward Valarr, as if he felt it, as if he recognized his presence even in the middle of that chaotic crowd. Their violet eyes met instantly, and the world seemed to stop. Valarr felt his breath fail, his heart slamming so hard it hurt. For a second — just one second — Aerion looked surprised, shocked, as if he couldn’t believe what he was seeing. The sofa is empty, as is the kitchen when he glances into it, and he eyes the papers and takeout containers strewn about with increasingly reluctant concern.
