He'd asked them, angry and terrified and desperate to be let out of that fucking submarine, how many more times they were going to use him, as though he didn't already know the answer.
Until you break. Until you're more useful dead than you are alive.
Perhaps Simon's true punishment had been endurance.
OR: As things start to settle between him and Ryland, Simon is faced with the reality of everything that has happened to him, scars and nightmares and everything in-between. The luxury of choice is new and terrifying, and Simon finds himself teetering on the edge of another abyss every time he looks himself in the eye, Ryland's footsteps embedded into the ash beside him. Healing is slow, and patience has never been one of Simon's virtues.

A quick glance to his left told Leon that Chris was out like a light, snoring with his face smushed into his pillow and one leg hanging off the mattress. Rubbing his face, Leon rolled out of bed silently and padded past the attached bathroom. He took a quick peek at Rose, sleeping soundly in her nursery, before the grandfather clock in the hallway informed him it was just past five in the morning–lovely.
Leon was still half-asleep when he located Scott, so he only felt a mild sort of surprise when he realized he was lying facedown on the tile floor in the kitchen. It seemed pointless to ask whether he was okay–clearly the answer was no–so Leon dropped into a crouch next to him and carded his fingers through soft blond hair as he inquired, “Hey, baby. What's wrong?”
A long silence, then: “I got my period.”
(AKA a thinly-veiled excuse to write fluffy period sex for Scennedyfield.)

Summary
Chris, approaching his 50's, is still working for STARS... and still attending the annual RPD work retreat. This time, however, there's a new recruit on the team. And from the very first moment that he lays eyes on Leon, Chris is in completely over his head.
Leon is easy to crush on. But Chris' crush gnaws violently at him, injecting him with equal amounts of jealousy and self-hatred for every sliver of hope that it provides.
