That seemed to make the wailing grow in volume, so Bruce instead just lazily drew a hand up and down the bony muscular back. He continued the motion for awhile, but when the tears persisted he lifted his book back up and began to read aloud.
”I believe it will have become evident why, for me, adjectives such as happy, contented, blissful, enjoyable, do not seem quite appropriate to any general description of this process I have called the good life, even though the person in this process would experience each one of these at the appropriate times. But adjectives which seem more generally fitting are adjectives such as enriching, exciting, rewarding, challenging, meaningful. This process of the good life is not, I am convinced, a life for the faint-fainthearted. It involves the stretching and growing of becoming more and more of one's potentialities. It involves the courage to be. It means launching oneself fully into the stream of life. Yet the deeply exciting thing about human beings is that when the individual is inwardly free, he chooses as the good life this process of becoming.”

The moon was so bright, and Dick’s tears unbearably real.
“It’s my job,” Bruce attested as he gently pulled away the small hand that was unknowingly tearing into his skin. “You’re safe. I’ve got you.”

A family trapped in a gilded cage. No capes AU.
Dick Grayson has rebellious streak and no clear direction, grapples with addiction and the shadows of his past. Bruce, having taken conservatorship, despite his own uncertainty about how to fix it. Meanwhile, Jason is desperate to keep the family intact, all the while haunted by the fear of discovering his older brother lifeless from an overdose.

Confusion furrows Bruce’s brows, but there’s something else there. More of that worry, but concentrated. The other Bruce didn’t look so worried. Smug. Sad. Never worried. Maybe that’s a bad sign. “Why would I tell you to lay in the floor?”

“B,” Dick cries, dropping into his chest, shoulders shaking.
For an awful, awful moment, Dick realizes he’s made a mistake. He’s not twelve anymore—the kid who crawled into Batman’s lap is gone, grown up. He shouldn’t be doing this, he shouldn’t need this.
And then Bruce’s arms fold him in closer. “Shh,” he murmurs. “It’s okay.”
Dick cries harder, he’s desperate, dragging himself onto Bruce to wrap winding limbs around him. He doesn’t want to let go. Everything hurts, inside and out, and he wants…he wants…
“Dad,” Dick says. “Dad, help.”
Or, Dick gets many hugs over the years, but there's one he needs.
