When Jerome Eugene Morrow gave up his identity, the one thing he had left, he had imagined some faceless, indolent invalid that he could largely ignore. As forgettable as everyone else, fitting right into the cookie-cutter definition of success and validity.
Truthfully, Eugene hadn’t imagined he’d get anyone at all. Nine-point-three aside, there was one glaring fault to an otherwise perfect sequence, completely unavoidable to Eugene as one of few openly transgender valids. (Well, perhaps “openly” was pushing it, considering how desperately he wanted to scrub away that part of himself, but there was little he could do to hide it now.)
He had not imagined Vincent Freeman.
