Summary
As her eyes finally began to adjust enough to see, a dim light flickered on, likely triggered by her movement, granting Maelle her first real look at the room. As it flickered into view, a pained, frightened whimper pierced the silence just as Maelle’s breath froze in her lungs. She could only stand and stare, trying to process the horrible sight before her. Abruptly, she was deeply grateful that she hadn’t taken lunch that day. Bile burned at the back of her throat as her stomach revolted and threatened to send its meagre contents back up her throat.
It was a man. Barely. Or the remains of one.
Verso made a choice when he could no longer abide his father slaughtering Expeditioners and his mother wasting away year after year. He chose to return to Lumiere and attempt to aid the Expeditions in their goal directly with his own knowledge. It's a choice he'd come to regret.

Remember this - your name is Verso. You are at least 50 years old. To get your age, subtract the number on the monolith from 100 and add 33. You don’t look old. You’re immortal. You are not real.
Your mother is Aline Dessendre. She is the Paintress. She made you to replace her real son. This is important- you are not real. Your sister is Alicia. Your father is Renoir. You had another sister, but she’s missing. Her name is Clea. None of you are real.
Your mother is trapped at the top of the Monolith by her husband, the real Renoir. Every year she gets weaker and he erases more people. The people of this canvas call it the Gommage. You will not Gommage.
Your mother is dying because she’s been here too long. The only way to save your mother is to make her leave the canvas. The only way to do that is to kill her. You need to work with an Expedition to get through the barrier and kill her.
You won’t remember any of this. Keep this journal close, and read it when you forget again. Every time you die you’ll forget more.

Summary
encordés (French, mountaineering, plural): roped together; tied to a partner on the same rope, so that if one of you falls, the other can hold the line.
Gustave is an experienced climber. When a route in the French Alps goes wrong, he expects broken bones and weeks of gruesome recovery. What he does not expect is, instead, to fall, slowly and catastrophically, for the unfairly attractive mountain rescuer who keeps visiting his hospital room.
But Verso carries his own scars, and Gustave has learned the hard way that being wanted means hiding the parts of himself that are broken, and that leaving first hurts less than being left behind.
This is a story about concussed flirting, scars and second chances, about being seen completely — and two stubborn idiots learning that the rope works in both directions.
