Malfoy’s growl-like exhale brought her attention back to him. "If you go all bleeding-heart on me, I'm leaving you here."
She snapped her eyes back to his. "Wait…You’ll take me?"
In answer, he glared at her while he dug the small bag from his pocket and tipped its contents into his palm, leaving a tiny wooden star there.
Hermione only stared at his proffered hand, the shock of his decision to allow her to join him sending her body into an immobilized state.
"Twelve seconds, Granger."
Before she could think of a better option, Hermione placed her own hand into his palm, almost as if she were accepting an invitation to dance with him.
His hand was warm against hers, and despite the absurdity of the circumstances, her body slowly uncoiled in relief, anticipating the balm to her raw nerves the quiet forest was sure to provide.

Hermione and Draco attend the same magi-scientific field study in the Forbidden Forest and decide the strange reactions they begin to have to each other are the perfect excuse to indulge in things they typically wouldn’t consider.

She reveled in it, committed to her course and determined to see it through more than ever. "This could have been an easy three days for you, Malfoy. I was prepared to respect your wishes as much as was reasonable. But if this is how you are choosing to treat me for doing something kind for you while I'm quite literally trapped in your home, then I'm not going to play nice anymore." She retrieved her plate and water, sending him a malicious smirk that could have rivaled one of his own.
His animosity clicked back into place, a cruel smile curving his lips. “Threats now, Granger? I believe it’s safe to assume friendship isn’t in our future after all.”
“You misunderstand,” she said, rising so she could have the height advantage for once. “It’s my friendship I’m threatening you with.”

Hermione waited for him to open his eyes and slipped her fingertips between the buttons of his shirt again. The guarded expression reappeared on Draco's face. He searched hers, and when she smiled at the same time as she stroked over his scales, he exhaled heavily.
"I'm—"
"Half a dragon, I know." Hermione pulled his shirt out of his trousers and flicked the bottommost button open.
"—not fully human."
"I figured that out when I felt the scales." She looked down and opened the next button. His lower torso shimmered in the ambient lighting as he flexed his abdomen involuntarily. Her breath caught. "Beautiful."
He put his fingers under her chin and tipped her head up until he caught her eyes. "I'm not fully human, Hermione."
Finally, it clicked.
