Studying the huge chandelier above the hall full of people, Zhongli wonders if Childe, too, might be looking at those dancing sparkles. From across the hall, maybe? Even if it's just a hopeful sentiment and nothing more, he's here now, which is certainly better than the gloomy darkness of the previous month.
Somewhere here, in the middle of the celebration and glory, he must be hiding.
If he's hiding at all. That Zhongli still has to find out. For now, only the chandelier as his guiding star: does this bronze light fall on Childe's hair, playing with the red hues?

Childe takes a deep breath, gathering up the fragments of whatever remains of him, and leaves. He pushes past the staff in the hallway – their shifty glances and disdainful looks cut deeper now, sharpened by the truth. Somewhere behind him, Zhongli calls his name, but Childe doesn’t look back.

"I can do better than that," Childe mutters, leaning his back on the Geo pillar, though he wouldn’t mind sliding right off of it onto the floor. For now, he just hypnotizes the marble with his gaze, knowing fine well that he sounds like a stubborn child. The worst part is that he can’t help it.
What does it say about him as a warrior that his goal tonight has nothing to do with his practice? He doesn’t need to have Zhongli’s back pinned to the ground, and the idea of seeing him bleeding even a drop makes Childe sick.
His version of a victory: those moments when Zhongli’s hands end up as close to his skin as he can get.

“So, you gonna tell me what the sleepwalking’s about?”
Zhongli sighs. “It’s not that I do not wish to share the details of my life with a dear friend. But you might wish you hadn’t asked.”
“Try me,” Childe suggests. “Can’t be any weirder than anything else I’ve learned about you.”
Zhongli snorts softly through his nose, taking a sip of tea. “I believe I am undergoing an old ritual, of sorts. Though I am more human now than ever before, I find myself beholden to certain instincts."
“Oh?” Childe shifts upright, interested. “You mean… dragon stuff.”
Zhongli nods, licking his lips and directing his gaze away from Childe. “I believe,” he says again, the faintest tinge of color creeping over his cheeks, “that I am searching for a mate.”
Zhongli has been sleepwalking through the Liyue streets in the dead of night, unresponsive and with eyes aglow. Childe intends to get to the bottom of the situation, but everything changes when Zhongli reveals the likely motive behind his nightly wanderings.
Childe knows he shouldn't fuck Zhongli in his sleep. He really shouldn't. But when has he ever been sensible?

“You’re telling me,” Childe says, his voice increasing in pitch with every word, “that you—you, the fancy funeral consultant who lectures pigeons and alphabetizes his tea cabinet—you’re biologically wired to marry the first person you screw and stick with them forever?!”
Zhongli, impassive: “I wouldn't put it quite so crudely.”
Childe: “You wouldn’t put anything crudely, you gilded fossil!”
Zhongli arches a brow.
Childe slams his hands on the table. “Do you realize what this means?!”
“No,” Zhongli lies. Zhongli, whose tail is curled just slightly tighter around the leg of his chair. Zhongli, who is starting to suspect he may not survive this breakfast with his dignity intact.
“It means,” Childe says, eyes blazing with the sort of deranged glee only possible from someone who once tried to flood a nation as a workplace prank, “you’ve already picked me!”
In which Childe learns dragons mate for life and becomes completely insufferable about it.
