Summary
When the boy in front of him lifts his head, all lean muscle and tired eyes, Mike’s first thought isn’t relief— it’s shock.
Because Will Byers is dead. Dead since that night in the quarry, dead since they zipped that black bag over his head and the dirt on his grave filled in with grass.
Good things don’t just happen to Mike Wheeler. Dead people don’t just come back to life. But the boy in front of him is breathing, chest heaving up and down in steady rhythm, looking more alive than Mike’s felt in years.
Or: When Will’s body is pulled out of the quarry, everyone stops looking for him, including Mike. Five years later, he’s still alive.

“It’s Gale.”
“Yeah okay, Buck.”
“Whatever.” Gale rolls his eyes and lazily waves to the group as he exits the dingy room, hearing a “bye, sunshine!” from both Curt and John. He shakes his head, smiling to himself.

Gale Cleven is good at staying in control; of himself, of his choices, of certain lines he won’t cross.
Frustratingly and irritatingly, John Egan makes it harder than it should be.OR:
A 1970's set boarding school AU in which John and Gale learn to navigate their lives, choices, and each other.-------
