The moment Jonathan first laid eyes upon him he wasn’t impressed. Didn’t even pay attention to him. He was nothing special; clad in red, hair slicked back—one among a dozen others, all of them more beautiful, elegant, captivating. Until Jon saw him at the front of the stage with his partner in the final pas de deux.
There was nothing mediocre, nothing unremarkable about him anymore. Every line of his body smooth and strong, every muscle tense and sculpted. Every single movement powerful and precise. Passionate and perfect. But the thing that caught Jon’s attention above all was the burning intention, the laser focus—the fire in his eyes that revealed emotions the others could not match, which held sinister notions of forbidden sins no one else dared to think about. The fire that promised absolution and salvation and everything Jon could only dream about after seeing into these eyes.

Jonny wakes up first, a foot away from Patrick on the bed and tangled in the sheets he'd kicked off in the night. Patrick in his sleep is a mostly unremarkable thing. His hair is a few weeks overdue for a haircut, just a shade too long, and he's snoring softly, mouth open and drool gathering on the pillow beneath him.
Jonny would go to the ends of the Earth with him. He would kill and die with him. He has gotten into really ill-advised brawls at rec-league volleyball tournaments with him. When Jonny thinks about the enormity of all that, everything else pales in comparison.

The curls fall away easily, settling down Patrik’s pale back where he’s allowed the blanket to fall and nestle in his lap. There’s an angry yellow bruise following down his thin spine, and Jonathan wants to run his fingers over the knobs, but he continues to cut instead, pulling Patrik’s hair as taut as it will go before he swiftly brings the knife down, cutting close to the scalp. He is careful not to nick Patrik, working quickly and efficiently, trying to keep the hair even until all the curls are gone.
He runs his hand gently over Patrick’s head when he is done, feeling the pinpricks of hair. “I am sorry, malysh.”
Patrik shakes his head, not bothering to touch his hair. He sits quietly, looking out into the forest, tear streaks down his cheeks. Jonathan hadn’t even noticed when he began to cry.
“I think,” Patrik says, voice so low that he is barely audible, “there is no more tsesarevich.”

Jonny looks at him confusedly. “I invited you out.”
“I know, but—”
“I know I don’t have a lot of money,” Jonny interrupts, voice higher than he means it to be, suddenly looking very annoyed. When the people at the next table turn to look at them he swallows, shoulders hunched. “I drive a shitty car and live in a trailer park, but I can afford to buy you a drink and dinner at TGI Friday’s.”
Patrick goes quiet, mouth in a thin line, feeling suddenly very, very guilty.
“Look,” Jonny continues. “I know you’re out of my league. I can’t take you to the newest steakhouse like Greg, or on a yacht like Mike, but I think you’re cute and I want to get to know you better.”
