    Summary

“I thought Viktor died believing I didn’t want to help people like him,” he said. “That I didn’t think it was worth the risk. I never forgave myself. I’ll—I’ll do anything. I don’t care what happens to me. I won’t fail him again.”

Following the tragic and sudden death of his partner, unable to cope with his grief, Jayce Talis resorts to the risky and controversial procedure of severance. Splitting the memories of his work life and personal life, he begins working for HexCorp to forget about losing Viktor for eight hours a day. It's working. It’s helping him. It must be.

Until, one day, a random stranger breaks into his garage claiming to know him, saying there is a way to reverse the severance procedure and warning him that not everything about either HexCorp or Viktor’s death is as it seems.

    Summary

Half a decade after Viktor leaves Piltover for good, a fragment of Hexcore permanently adhered to his soul, an old friend comes to him for help. This wouldn't be an issue, if the same old friend hadn't spent the last five years trying to hit him, very hard, with a really big hammer.

“You’re not real,” Viktor repeated, closing his eyes. Even with the knowledge that this was a dream, the gentle touch unraveled him. There was an impact crater where his heart should be.
The calloused pad of Jayce's thumb found the corner of Viktor’s mouth. “All right. I’ll bite – what’s your evidence for this hypothesis?”
Viktor smiled into the touch, felt it tug against Jayce's thumbprint. “Isn’t it obvious? You haven’t tried to kill me yet.”

    Summary

He walks toward Jayce, driven by a thousand hands on his back. Of people in that room, of ghosts, of his own mother. All pushing him toward Jayce and toward a future that metamorphosizes with every step he takes. Viktor can feel the winds shift and part of his story is wiped clean, unwritten by his own actions that night.

Viktor doesn’t look back. He allows Jayce to open the door for him, and steps out into the evening. The sunset is vibrant, gold and pink and explosive.

Feeling unaccepted by Piltover in the wake of his 28th birthday, Viktor returns to the Undercity for an annual festival to reconcile who he is with where he came from.

    Things go south.

    Summary

Jayce pauses to steady himself on the wall, he’s running out of strength in his arms. The other version of Viktor, the lonely mage who’d insisted there was only one, violent solution to the problem of himself, had reluctantly given him a tip. Physical touch , he had said, will temporarily disarm him. But you must kill him from a distance, do not let him get close.

    ***

Jayce loses his will to kill Viktor in the commune and has to come up with a plan B.

    Summary

“I am guessing you have another invitation,” Viktor says softly. Jayce’s non-answer of shrugging his shoulders is enough of a confirmation for Viktor to continue. “The flowers did not work? Or the strongly worded letters?”

“Not even Mel is working with me on this. She says I have to go,” Jayce spits, “like I — like I’m expected to recite all our research on a coin flip. As if anyone there besides her will even understand it.”

He hides his eyes behind the cup of his hands, though Viktor knows he’s still staring down at their scattered notes for a distraction. Between vellum and coffee-stained sheafs of schematics is a familiar, albeit more elaborately decorated, square of near-black cardstock. Its gold filigree glitters in the frosted light coming in from the windows, yet it brings no warmth. No glee. No self-satisfaction at having caught it too late.

Viktor slides it out from between their notes with two fingers, leaving it on the tabletop for the both of them to read. Jayce’s name is prominent in thin, blocky text — another invitation, another offer for his time in exchange for a few hours of pretend in front of a flock that’s already made up its mind.
