Buck’s mouth drops open and snaps shut. “I didn’t have one.”
“Bullshit. What were you gonna do? Let yourself get bit and pay your penance that way?” He crosses the distance between them before Buck’s brain kicks back online. Eddie’s hands curl into his collar, pushing him away before dragging him right back. Eddie’s teeth glint in the morning light. His canines look longer in the dawn. “Gonna take the easy way out and disappear on me? Make me look for you until I find you half-rotted, trying to get a taste?”

Remi thinks for a second, her head cocking like a new puppy. "You ever heard of a cracking egg?"
Eddie stares at her like an explanation will start wrapping around her head like lines from a teleprompter. "Is that a puberty thing?"
Her mouth drops open, but she works through a silent thought before nodding so very slowly. "You know what? Yeah, I think it could be. Now, I'm not saying that your kid's egg is cracking, I'm just—," she waves her hands, wiggling her fingers, "y'know, putting it out there."
"Am I supposed to know what that means?"
Or, teenagers are complicated. Chris Diaz is absolutely no exception to that rule.

There’s my birthday boy, Grandma croons every time she finds him. Doesn’t matter if it’s been five minutes or a stiff fifteen, there she is declaring to anybody who will listen: here is Christopher. He is a boy and also has a birthday today. A birthday boy. A sweet little baby who cannot help hang streamers or sort the stupid plastic cutlery, one who wanted blue hats and plates like he doesn’t know that boys like blue and he’s a boy, so therefore the birthday boy must have a blue birthday.
It doesn’t mean anything that his eyes track on a pink envelope one of the church ladies brings in.

“I told a priest I was straight before I left.”
“No, but… Like, everybody, Eddie. If I had a grandma I probably would have called her.”

“I- I did. For a bit,” he sighed, biting the inside of his cheek. “But it, uh, it didn’t work out. She thought I had my head in the clouds.” He pulled his knees to his chest. “Guess she was right. She’s with Mark now.”
“Rocky hate Mark.”
“Yeah, screw Mark. He sounds like a jackass.”
Ryland flinched, looking around the Hail Mary on instinct before he remembered that he was alone, he was twelve light-years away from the next closest human. He sighed, squeezing his eyes shut. But then again, why did that voice sound so clear?
Or-
Rocky and Grace talk about mates, and when Rocky announces that he hates Mark, Grace suddenly remembers two other people who also really hate Mark. A camera woman named Jody, and her mysterious stuntman boyfriend with a Miami Vice Stunt Team jacket that shares Ryland's face. But annoyingly, he can't seem to remember the stuntman's name, and why he cared so much about him and his leather jacket.

Summary
While in El Paso after running away from home to his grandparents, Chris stews in his anger towards his dad. However, the room he is staying in used to be Eddie’s and Chris stumbles across his high school diary. While he starts reading it to see if his dad ever wrote down anything embarrassing, it causes him to realize how different his childhood has been form Eddie’s, that his family isn’t what he always thought it had been. And that the bridge between him and Eddie isn’t as burnt and the damage not as permanent as Eddie fears.
AKA: a view of season 8A from Chris’s perspective where he starts to get a look behind the curtain of the generational trauma his family holds and finds some grace and forgiveness for Eddie along the way.
