They must walk this dark road to its completion, with everyone cooperating and joining the battle for their very souls.

Long has it been since young blood graced these grounds, and," the count pauses, catching his heavy and pained breath, his eyes seeming to roam over Thomas' face — and the man looks so very much a wolf, hungry and calculating. "I wouldst drink you in."
"As-as you wish, my lord," Thomas whispers. The tremble in his voice this time is not from fatigue, and the flush in his cheeks can no longer be attributed solely to the threat of a fever taking hold.
Is this what the horse feels like when held in its new master's hands? A beast full of fear and uncertainty while some stranger inspects you as property?

Orlok is tense. There is always a stiffness to him, that corpse-like rigidity that never fully eases. But he has risen many times now to her screams, her frantic cries. He knows what — who — her dreams are focused on. "…still you crave the boy."
She doesn't apologize. Refuses to. It is her right to miss her husband. It is her curse to now hunger for him.

It is a guilt Ellen will carry her through all her days that when her husband made it, panting and pained, through their bedroom door before her would be murderer arrived, before the crawling snake she was meant to kill passed through the window she had called him to, a little part of her felt relief, felt the safety of another’s presence, not alone.

There is something that feels small, like her —a tinge of stress and tightness that is not her own — comes from there often—but also love, a holding as her mama does for her. Warmth she leans into.
There is something big, and empty, that Ellen shies away from, that occasionally makes her heart stutter, makes her burst into tears in the night. It frightens her mama. She pushes it aside, looks away from it, if she doesn’t acknowledge it, it is not there.
