Kara stares out into the city, thumb tracing the top of her mug in silent, anxious circles. Her chest aches with vulnerability, something she never really allowed herself to show in front of Lena, not with the secret hanging over them like a shadow, forcing her to choose words carefully as to not reveal herself. Self-preservation is no longer an option.
"Both," she admits.

Shane grabbed a teaspoon from the drawer next to him and dipped it into the sauce, turning to face Ilya with his hand cupped underneath it to catch the drips. As he moved around the island, Ilya’s pulse picked up again and his brain smashed together a montage of nights like this from some imagined future. Shane cooking for him in their kitchen, offering his creation up for Ilya’s judgement. Maybe there would be a nice playlist on. Maybe the pasta would be actual pasta, not chickpea. Maybe they’d be cooking for more than just the two of them. Christ.
Balancing on the cusp of a something new, Ilya boards a flight to Shane's cottage for two weeks.

The video JJ sent was just captioned oh shit. It jumped straight to a corner battle—Boston’d had a home game against the Nomads last night. Shane had only caught the score, exhausted after his own game, but now dread pooled in his stomach. What did oh shit mean? He could see Rozanov racing after a loose puck and then a Nomad defender came in from the side with a shoulder check. Rozanov caught an edge and pitched forward just as the defender caught Rozanov at the wrong angle, sending him head first into the boards.
Shane made a high, frightened noise he’d never heard from himself before.
