Peter looks at her, feeling all that restless energy, previously so light and translucent, solidify into something heavy and angry and defensive.
“Well,” he says, “it’s a good thing I’m not bipolar.”
And that’s that.
(Except it's not. Because when Tony asks him how his therapy session went, Peter tells him it was awesome and swallows this agitated thing inside himself that wants to snarl, and he doesn’t know why he feels so angry about it all anyway because it’s not like he’s actually bipolar, he knows that’s not him. Spider-Man can’t have bipolar disorder.)

He fumbled with his binder as he took it, eyes wide as he said, “are you sure? I mean, I love poetry and all, but I don’t think-I’m not sure—what if I can’t write poetry?”
Mr. Sam’s dark eyes softened, and he reached out to place a hand on Tommy’s shoulder, squeezing it gently. “Everyone has to start somewhere; every poet, from me to Rudy Francisco, started off without knowing a clue about what we were doing. Tommy, it’s not about if you can or cannot write poetry, it’s about if you want to.”

It was just supposed to be a kiss. Maybe some meaningless sex, if it led to it. That was all. Yet, despite thinking that's what he wanted, it wasn't. The kiss was nice, but it wasn't what he needed. This, God, this was what he needed. The warmth of someone else against him. Physical contact after so long spent pushing everyone away. He could push her away later. Maybe gaslight her into thinking this never happened. Right now, though, he needed this.
