Summary
Mister Wizard won’t meet his eyes.
And—honestly, Max thinks that might be a bit unfair. Like—sure, he messed up. What else is new?
Or, Max Blunder was always going to be a screw-up. It was his destiny since birth—even his name set the precedent for the rest of his life. He had made his peace with that, after so long.
So why does it hurt so much when he makes this mistake?

Summary
Scar was in love with his depression.
He reveled in its crashing glory and followed its every word like a god. He couldn't help himself, couldn't even admit it to his fellow hermits.
Every night he’s pulled in, crying with the cold embrace of his illness and all he knows is that it is the only thing that has stayed. It is the only thing that has remained through childhood and trauma, the only thing that has kissed his lips with sweet solace and returned the next night.
Every morning though, when the sun greets him through his windows and his depression retreats to the shadows of his room, he's reminded of a fact.
This is not a love story.

Summary
Rotting away in an empty apartment wasn't the life Grian had wanted, but it was the one he'd resigned himself to. It seemed easier to hope he'd fade away than to face the giant monstrosity that was existence. Why did everything have to be scary? Where had he gone wrong? What had led him to this life of exhaustion and anxiety? It felt like it would never end, darkness and fear coiling around his neck like a noose, forever tightening until he'd finally snap.

Summary
“Do you ever think of sleeping anyway?” Grian found himself asking.
“Oh, constantly,” Scar nodded. His eyes were raking over Grian’s face like he was trying to memorise it.
“Yeah,” Grian breathed.Positioned the way he was, he would only have to lean the slightest bit forwards to press his mouth to Scar’s.
And when that thought came into his mind, his jaw nearly dropped, because god-dammit he needed some sleep and then he could get back to his repression, like normal Grian. He needed to shut his eyes, and stop staring into Scar’s! (He didn’t.)Instead, he opened his mouth.
Which was usually a mistake, if you were him.“When I’m tired, I get really impulsive.” he said before he could stop himself.

Summary
“Something on your mind, Grian?” Scar’s voice rumbles out, expression filled to the brim with mischief. Grian holds steadfast, refusing to take the bait to look anywhere except those faultless eyes. He does not watch the way his companion’s lips move around the words, the way his nostrils flare out just a tad as he releases the smallest chuff of humor, nor how the tilt of his ears shifts with it.
“No, my mind is actually perfectly empty, Sire,” he replies sarcastically, the formal title tacked on to hopefully irk the emperor—and it works, if the tight-lipped smile and slightest hint of sharp, pearly-white teeth is any indication.
OR: Grian practices holding back his magic with Scar.
