Summary
Cloned Governor KA3-5555555 of the Blue-hat Cat colony ‘Curiosity’ is in trouble. The crops are struggling, the population is stagnant, and communication with home is at an all-time low on account of the nearby galactic GELF civil war nearing its conclusion ‘any day now’ and a government that seems more interested in self-congratulation than actually helping those posted in the outskirts of their glorious empire.
Still, short of Cloister himself showing up uninvited; he might just about turn this dustbowl around.

With an engineering fault trapping civilians on board an aeroplane attached to a launching space shuttle, a mysterious ship straying close to a cosmic fault line and sending out a distress signal only old computers can read, an underwater resort sunken with people slowly suffocating within, and an earthquake trapping people under a mountain landslide, it was safe to say that international rescue were having a bit of a busy day.
Oh, and Alan Tracy has just been expelled from school. Oh boy.

The Eridian thrills a high sound that doesn’t get picked up by the translator which means that it has no clear meaning. Like when a human gasps or sucks in a deep breath. It actually sounds a little like that. When they notice that I’m staring straight at them they scramble back into their hiding spot and hold very still.
A child, I realize with a start.
That’s a child!
“Hey,” I call and the kid squeaks again. I was about to get to my feet but abort the movement and crawl closer on my hands and knees until I'm inches away from the xenonite wall. I wait and it takes me much too long to realize that they don’t have to peek around the corner to see if I’m still there.
“Hey there,” I try again, my voice low and calm. It’s my teacher voice, the one I use for shy and scared students.
Used.
The fact that I haven’t had to use it for years and it still comes to me automatically almost knocks the air out of my lungs but this is not about me, it’s about making sure the little pebble doesn’t die of fright from the scary alien. “Hi, I’m Grace. It’s alright, you don’t have to be scared.”

I very carefully set the gun near the xenonite barrier. “Need a word. Fast moving projectile launcher. This is an object that can make small objects go very fast.”
Rocky gets close to the barrier and seems to be inspecting it with his sonar. “Unfamiliar with concept. How fast can objects move with launcher, question?”
“An object is made for the launcher. Cannot be any object. We call objects ‘bullets.’ We call launcher ‘gun.’ It uses gunpowder to make a small explosion, which is powder made from sulfur, potassium nitrate, and charcoal- Carbon. In high oxygen environments this creates a small explosion that propels the bullet forward at 100 meters a second.”
Rocky scurries back. I would too, but I have the business end facing away from me and the xenonite barrier. “Are objects in this launcher, question?”
“Yes, I do not know how to take them out.” I point to the end of the gun that houses the bullets. “In Earth’s atmosphere, they would be safe to remove. But in a high oxygen environment like the Hail Mary, I’m afraid of causing a spark that would make the bullets fire anyway.”
