Summary
One thing that Rocky has learned about humans is that they like to look at pictures.
Maybe. Or maybe it is just a particular habit of his Grace, who seems to pass more and more time sitting in the projection room and looking at his rolling images of Earth.
Rocky likes Earth. Especially the beach. That’s Grace’s favorite place, too.
But the pictures don’t change. Not more than they did the first time Grace showed him, with the waves crashing up onto the sand and the leaves of the trees rustling in the wind.

Summary
One Grace-sleep is not so long.
It is not “night,” but Grace calls it night, and so Rocky does too. One human night. One third of one human day. One three-hundred-thousandth of Rocky’s life so far.
This is what Rocky tells himself. He folds up on his xenonite shelf above Grace’s sleeping area, and he listens, and he fiddles with his clock, and he tells himself that it is not so long.

”Being stubborn!” Rocky accuses. ”Making excuses, statement!” And yeah, I don’t have any defense for that one.
“Will you watch me sleep? I want to take a nap,” I ask without preamble. I’m tired and don’t have the energy to argue right now. Or eat for that matter.
”Yes. Always watch, fact,” he agrees immediately. ”Still mad. But Rocky watch, statement.”
I set aside the laptop, rubbing at my eyes with a tired sigh as I get comfortable right there in the little ‘nest’ as Rocky likes to call it. It makes me feel just a little better. I’m drifting off before I even realize.

Ryland wakes up on a planet 16.5 light years from home with nearly 2 decades worth of memories missing. He’s done incredible things, or so he’s told, but all of that is overshadowed by the painful process of remembering. There’s a lot of jagged edges around events from his life that he wishes remained buried. But for the first time, Ryland has the opportunity to pick up pieces previously left untouched, and create a stronger foundation for the new relationships in his one-of-a-kind, wild ride of a life.
(Plenty of angst/hurt/comfort, flashbacks, etc. with fluff and lovely bits holding it together in between)

He’s been working very hard on something he refuses to show me, says it’s for my birthday. The first time Rocky said that, even I had forgotten it was coming up to that time in a couple of Earth months. I questioned how he even knew when it was but apparently I leave my calendar open a lot on one of the sixteen laptops the Mary is stocked with. So.
In any case, birthdays aside, he won’t tell me what the darned thing is!
On their lengthy trip to Erid, Rocky works on a birthday present for his best friend as Grace continues to grapple with his dwindling food supplies and the heavy burden of his memory loss.

“What is a ‘field trip’?”
The unexpected question makes me stop in my tracks. I stumble over my own two feet and almost bite my own tongue which is a new low, even for me. If I keep going like this I am never going to beat the clumsy human allegations. At least Rocky is not here. If he’d witnessed my latest embarrassing blunder he would have found ways to tease me about it for a week straight. It’s unfortunate that my class has to see me like this but they are a lot more forgiving and understanding of their ungraceful teacher than my best friend. A fact I like to hold over his head from time to time.
Not that he cares. He maintains that he’s earned the right to mock me as much as he likes after having to watch me stumble and fall repeatedly over the same threshold for four years.
And maybe he’s not wrong.
Don’t ever tell him I said that.

There is no way Grace can take the pebbles on a field trip. At least not without help.

The Eridian thrills a high sound that doesn’t get picked up by the translator which means that it has no clear meaning. Like when a human gasps or sucks in a deep breath. It actually sounds a little like that. When they notice that I’m staring straight at them they scramble back into their hiding spot and hold very still.
A child, I realize with a start.
That’s a child!
“Hey,” I call and the kid squeaks again. I was about to get to my feet but abort the movement and crawl closer on my hands and knees until I'm inches away from the xenonite wall. I wait and it takes me much too long to realize that they don’t have to peek around the corner to see if I’m still there.
“Hey there,” I try again, my voice low and calm. It’s my teacher voice, the one I use for shy and scared students.
Used.
The fact that I haven’t had to use it for years and it still comes to me automatically almost knocks the air out of my lungs but this is not about me, it’s about making sure the little pebble doesn’t die of fright from the scary alien. “Hi, I’m Grace. It’s alright, you don’t have to be scared.”

Summary
Rocky and Grace have been alone for so long, that it was only natural that they became (perhaps unhealthily) attached to the only other person they could interact with for several years. Separating them, even for very necessary reasons, isn't fun for either of them.
When Rocky gifts Grace a stuffed animal to ease the loneliness, Grace quickly becomes almost just as attached. Rocky, on the other hand, starts to wish that Grace would (and could) hold him like that.-----

I tried to look up and meet her in the eye, but failed. My heart was thumping hard, as if the organ was a prisoner in my ribcage, bones for bars. I tried to focus on her words, but they all blurred under the ringing and buzzing in my ears.
When Grace has a nightmare and panic attack after, he's surprised by his emotional support Eridian helping him so well out of his spiral.
