His phone buzzes.
Buck feels it more than he hears it, like it’s wired straight into him, like there’s no real separation between him and whatever Eddie is about to say next. He tries to ignore it, really, he does, because this is what normal people do on dates.
They focus, they engage, they don’t keep checking their phone every time it lights up like it’s the most important thing in the room.
It buzzes again.That’s when he reaches for it.

“You okay?” Eddie asks, like he always does now.
Buck pauses this time, because that question has started to feel like it means more than it should. Like it’s not just about right now. Not just about him standing in a kitchen with a half empty cup and too many thoughts he hasn’t said out loud yet.
“You’ve been doing that a lot,” Buck says instead.
Eddie’s brow furrows slightly. “Doing what?”
“Watching me,” Buck says, quieter now, like he’s testing it out. “Like I’m gonna… like something’s gonna happen.”

He’s grabbing his keys, heart kicking up, something urgent settling in his chest that he doesn’t question. “Stay where you are,” he says, already heading for the door. “I’m coming over.”

“I’m already in my jeep,” Buck lies easily. “Just hang on, okay?”
There’s a pause, then, quieter, Eddie’s voice comes through the phone, “Okay.”

“They kept saying it,” Buck continues, because now that it’s out it won’t stop, it won’t go back, “over and over, like if I just tried harder, acted right, said the right things then maybe I’d—” He cuts himself off, laughing quietly, something cracked at the edges. “Maybe I’d be close enough.”
Eddie’s expression shifts, something softer, something that makes Buck’s chest tighten.
“And it’s just—” Buck gestures vaguely, his movements too sharp, too restless, “it’s not even the first time.”

The first time Tengen noticed it, he was moving the coffee table closer to the couch so he could lay his feet more comfortably on it.
Kyoujurou was getting ready in the kitchen and had stepped around the tiny island to ask Tengen a question when he tripped over one of Tengen’s discarded socks. That in itself wouldn’t have been much cause for concern, but Tengen was convinced Kyoujurou was part cat with his freakish sense of balance. In the four years he’d been rooming with the man, he’d never seen Kyoujurou fall once.
But then it happened again. And again.
Seriously, something was up. And Tengen was gonna get to the bottom of it.

Giyuu’s breath hitched, his eyes shining with a mix of defiance and desperation. "Why do you keep leaving it, Shinazugawa? Why are you marking a house you say you’re going to leave?"
The silence that followed was electric. Sanemi’s scent flared, overwhelming and fierce, pinning Giyuu against the weight of the air itself. He looked down at Giyuu, his breath coming in short, jagged bursts. The Alpha had finally reached his limit; the fuse had finally hit the powder.
Sanemi’s hand shot out, grabbing Giyuu’s wrist—not to pull him away, but to steady himself. "Because I can't goddamn stand the thought of it smelling like anything else," Sanemi rasped, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous rumble. "I leave it because when I'm at my place, I'm thinking about you here, alone, in a house that’s too quiet."
He leaned in, his forehead nearly touching Giyuu’s. "You want the truth? I'm not leaving. I'm not going on that travel. Not unless you're the one walking beside me."
Or Sanemi and Giyuu find themselves in each other's orbit after the war.
