From the kitchen he can hear their voices. He listens as Yuna asks a few more questions—is she talking about the summer before their rookie season? Something about a hotel elevator. He hears Shane, “Mom, can we please talk about something else, just for a bit, please,” and Ilya actually laughs, ever so briefly—but David hears it and smiles.
