5 times Cliff Marleau and Ilya Rozanov almost kiss, and the 1 time they do.
Cliff felt reckless, untethered, as Rozanov skated towards him, the cup outstretched for a handoff.
Rozanov crashed into Cliff, and Cliff wrapped his arms around him, the cup in Rozanov’s arms above their heads. They screamed in each other’s faces, the emotion of it all, the excitement overwhelming.
And there was something else, a tether between their screaming mouths that pulled Cliff to duck his head further, something that prompted Rozanov’s eyes to darken, the corner of his lips to twitch mischievously.
Then the light of a television camera temporarily blinded Cliff and he was slammed back to earth. He could never, they could never, kiss here on the ice. It was an impossible dream.
Rozanov lowered the cup to his chest and handed it to Cliff who accepted it with a forced smile. Then he pressed his aching lips to the cool metal of the cup and closed his eyes.
In the locker room later, Cliff would see the photo of him kissing the cup, and see Rozanov kissing the cup at the exact same time, their lips separated by nothing but a trophy and an uncrossable line.
