"Where'd you come from?" Shane questions. "You're a long way from the refugee center."
"Atlanta."
"Oh, you poor thing," Lori breathes, stricken, exchanging a glance with Shane. "We never made it into the city, but we… we saw the bombs."
I didn't know there was a refugee center. This is the first time I've been outside in… God, it must be months now. We've been cooped up at home for weeks, waiting for the pandemic to pass. I must look about as clueless as I feel, because the questions stop.
"We're glad you're with us," Shane says eventually, making eye contact with me in the rearview. "Makin' it outta that city on your own? We could use somebody like you."
Somebody like me. Right.

Summary
Dennis Whitaker is near his breaking point. It's nothing new; he had been on the edge for years now. All throughout medical school, undergrad, and as far back as he could remember. He has never had anyone to lean on, to rely on when his house of cards comes tumbling down. There's only so long someone can go before something breaks.
Robby and Jack have become enraptured with the new resident. Dennis first caught their attention on his very first day in his ER rotation. He pulled Robby up off the floor and gave Jack the chance to cushion the eventual crash. And said nothing. No judgment, only acceptance and the desire to help. Dennis was able to save Robby and Jack by extension; now it was their turn to save him, even if it was from himself.

"You should keep teasing Robby until he gives in."
Dennis chuckles at her, "more like until he fires me."
Trinity rolls her eyes, "oh, come on. Yolanda was so much more flirty with me and she never got in trouble. Just be subtle."
"Yeah, but you actually liked her. Of course she wasn’t gonna get in trouble." He argues.
"Just think about it, Dennis, he can't really come onto you. He's your boss, you kinda need to take the lead with this one. Trust me, just try it and watch his reactions."

‘All I’m saying is… you chose the shyest, saddest, most complicated little emo boy on campus, and you thought hey, I know what’s a good idea-’ She knocks her head side to side with each word, mocking, using this low-pitched nasal tone to imitate him. ‘Let’s get into a fuckbuddy situation with him, and I’ll ignore how I’m desperate for monogamy, and Jonathan will pretend he didn’t have a humungous crush on me in high school, and we’ll never talk about our feelings, ever.’
‘I don’t sound like that.’
‘You so do.’
‘And I’m not desperate for monogamy.’ Whatever the fuck that means.
‘You so are.’

Jack didn’t wait.
He closed the distance in two strides and grabbed Dennis, hands sliding to both sides of the kid’s waist, hauling him off Trinity and straight into his chest. Dennis sagged instantly, collapsing against Jack like his bones had given up.

Summary
When Dennis agreed to cover shifts for Dr. Mohan on the night shift, he didn't think he would ever end up here. Kidnapped from the ambulance bay, his head pounding, and having to save the life of a man with limited medical supplies. That was supposed to be it. Somehow, he finds himself snatched up off a sidewalk, in the stables, in front of his home. There were no sacred spaces when you proved your worth.
In the middle of it all, Dennis is confused by the way Dr. Robby and Dr. Abbot are circling him. The way they'd reach out and brush their fingers against his skin. The way they made sure he ate, got rest, and stayed safe. It made him ache with something he hadn't felt in a long time.

Summary
Steve’s eyes softened. “Yeah. Because I do care, Byers. Can’t you see that I do? I mean- fuck. I care for you so fucking much that I’m scared to accept it,” Steve blurted out,
“…because I’ve made this image for myself, and in it I can’t even consider caring for you!”
The words hung between them, small and fragile, but they hit Jonathan harder than he expected.
A moment of silence followed by a change in closeness. Steve’s hand brushed against Jonathan’s arm accidentally- or maybe not…And yet, neither of them moved away.
Jonathan’s breath hitched slightly, the tension in the air crackling. He could feel Steve’s heartbeat against him, rapid and nervous.
“I…” Jonathan began, voice low, then stopped. He swallowed, stepping closer until their bodies were nearly touching. “I care for you. I also care for you, Steve…But I- we shouldn’t…”

“Whitaker, you need to sit down. You have a concussion.” The voice next to him tries to tell him, and it's almost familiar this time.
“Yeah I realized that, I am a fuckin' doctor. Student doctor. Whatever.” he replies, turning to squint at the man sitting next to him. “Look, can you just get Dr. Robby? He’ll tell you I'm fine, I gotta get back to work, I got… patients and shit.”
The man looks at someone behind him, some expression he can’t quite figure out. He starts to say something else, and—oh shit he’s gonna throw up fuck—he tries to lean away and not vomit all over anyone else. He doesn't quite make it.
“Shit,” yeah, he definitely ruined that guy’s shoes. Whoops. “Sorry.”
