    Summary

A flash of hurt crossed his twin’s face, and Donnie swallowed hard against the guilt. Whatever. It didn’t matter. Once they broke this thing, Donnie could fix that—

“Gee,” Leo muttered, half-smirking in a clear attempt to save face, “tell me what you really think.”

It was a statement that was clearly not meant to actually be directed at Donnie. It was not genuinely meant to elicit a response. And yet, words bubbled up in Donnie’s throat, and no matter how much he grit his teeth and clenched his jaw, he said them anyway. “I don’t like you,” he blurted out, digging his nails into the palm of his hand.

    -

Or, Donnie gets hit with a compulsory lying spell. It doesn't seem like that big of a deal until it really, really is.

    Summary

“Veterinarian’s aren’t that unusual a request in a New York hospital, Mr. Munroe.” Dr. Heo interrupted, not looking up from the clipboard. “You would be astonished at the amount of exotic animals that end up here in one way or another, in someone's emergency room visit. Not that often with your request though. Pediatric.” She said wryly, and finally looked up. Her smile warmed when she saw Yoshi’s pale, sweaty face, familiar with the sight of a father about to throw up. “Relax Dad, everything’s going to be fine. Now let’s see the babies.”

Yoshi looked over at Sal, who nodded. Both doctor’s had signed the paperwork, and they were foregoing an assisting nurse in the spirit of discretion.

Yoshi leant down for the carrier, giving it a couple of shushing noises and a quiet comforting murmur in Japanese as he brought it up to the table. Dr. Carter was leaning over Dr. Heo’s shoulder with the same bemused calm he had entered with, as if curious, but not too particularly fussed by the secrecy.

Once the pleated shade of the carrier was tilted back though, both his and Dr. Heo’s faces froze in expressions of shock.

The hand in his squeezed. “You’re okay,” April said, her voice wobbling dangerously. “We’re gonna be okay. I’ve got you. Can you tell me what you remember?”

He blinked slowly, furrowing his brow. Swallowing was a struggle. His chest twinged. He felt embarrassed when he whispered, “I don’t…”

“That’s okay,” she soothed. “I… I’m sorry for not being here sooner. The guys, they told me what was going on. They told me everything.”

Donnie stared at her blankly, trying to piece together what she meant. Everything. What was everything supposed to mean?

    Oh.

It slammed into him all at once. The large hand shattering his wrist, his head cracking against the floor, screaming as Leo ran his blade through his shoulder, Raph ripping through his shell like paper, dragging him back by the ankle, shattering his plastron, hands around his throat, squeezing, being dizzy and delirious and terrified and begging—

They’d tried to kill him. They’d tried to kill him and she knew.

    Summary

Raphael was trembling, already tearing up again. He was shaking with the force of his growl, and his eyes only seemed to sharpen when they locked with Splinter's.

Leonardo's snarling had been in-the-moment, defensive paranoia. Splinter was interchangeable from everyone else— all he had wanted was to get away, to hide, not to hurt. Raphael knew exactly who he was looking at, and he was furiously protective anyway.

He was not afraid to hurt him if he had to, to protect the boys that it had always been Splinter's duty to protect.

Splinter could not help but feel like he had done something irreconcilably wrong.

(or: the boys are hit by a mystic pollen that heightens their paranoia. to take care of them, splinter is forced to confront some uncomfortable truths about them; and more importantly, about himself.)
