“ Hi.” Harry says smoothly but there’s a smug undertone beneath it.
Louis purses his lips and he knows he can’t ignore him. He’s alone in a bathroom with three alphas. Playing nice is better than playing dead. Louis side glances at Harry, not stopping his hair fixing and sighs.
“Yes?”
The alpha grins and his dimples come into view. Louis refuses to admit how hot this guy is. Harry slides down to the next sink so he’s leaning on the one just next to Louis. Shortening the distance between them. The height difference much more apparent now. Louis doesn’t like where this is going.
“I love an omega who gets straight to the point”

Louis cocked his head.

Harry smirked at him.
“Let’s promise not to change.”
And Harry didn’t need to explain any further. Louis didn’t understand it, not really, at the time. Because it’d been hardly a week of the lot of them even knowing one another really, and they hardly knew anything about well… Anything, yet. But Louis knew there was something in it. And to be an arse, he raised his pinky.
“No changing,” Louis said. Harry dimpled, wrapping his pinky around Louis’.
“No changing.”
It was a first of many of their own little personal promises to one another. And the first promise the both of them had broken.

Summary
Louis really didn’t like therapy, that much was true. He had become notoriously used to keeping his emotions close to his chest, opening up to no one, keeping up the facade of someone who had their life together, and therapy was a special kind of torture. But he would much rather be sitting in therapy right now than in the studio, waiting for Harry Styles to show up.
The thing was, he could have said no. Louis could have read that text that reignited the band group chat after years of silence and ignored it. He could have just said he would come and then bailed. He could have told Harry to fuck off and blocked him.
But no. He’d fallen into the exact trap that he was sure Harry had set by putting the message in the group chat instead of sending it to them individually. There was no way he could refuse when Niall and Liam had been so enthusiastically on board with the idea.

Against popular beliefs, Louis Tomlinson never kissed Harry Styles.
It is a bit comical, thinking about it, after all the rumours, all the tattoos, all the songs, all hurt and all the longing, that much was true, Louis never even kissed him.
Louis likes to imagine, sometimes, what life could have been if they were a bit braver, all those years ago, in the X Factor house, or maybe just a bit later, during the five years of the band. What would have happened if they just found the courage to say the untold, to act on all the rumours they were constantly bombarded left and right, to finally scream to each other’s the truth, instead of whispering it through tattoos or song lyrics or soft touches.
Funny thing about the truth, though, is that it is never straightforward, it is faceted and complicated and it looks different depending on whom you ask.

In the Summer of 2023, Louis comes out to a lovely journalist that asks all the right questions. He hasn't anticipated that coming out, means opening old wounds that never really healed. When Harry calls him up, they finally have the conversation they avoided for thirteen years.

A little more than a year ago he would’ve been able to actually do something besides sitting here and watching Harry hurt without even knowing for sure why he is hurting. A couple of years ago, in this very same sickening room, he was having the same argument.
Or: the canon fic no one asked for in which Louis and Harry have to fight every single day to be together - and they never get tired, because, in the end, it's always worth it.
