“Hey,” she says, her lip caught between her teeth because she tries to be the pinnacle of cool and effortlessness but she basically begged this guy to be her date so she’s not sure how well that’s going to work today.
“Hey, Michelle,” he says, a little wistful she thinks but she shoves it to the back of her mind as she ushers him in from the cold. His smile is so familiar she almost takes a photo. She can't figure out if she's ever drawn him in crisis but she hasn't drawn anyone outside of LA in years. Maybe he's just someone she saw on the street and committed to memory because he's very cute. She realises she's staring and tries to shake herself out of it - that’s when she sees a few bunches of flowers in a gift bag.

Michelle blows out a breath, groaning at her ceiling, and then grabs a post-it note and a sharpie, the cap held between her teeth as she scribbles something down. She sticks it on the pot before gathering the rest of her things for work, and the screen door slams when she leaves.
The succulent sits by the railing of the porch with her note.

"What are you talking about?" Michelle continues in that horrible voice that might only be detectable by bats or dogs. "Why would I sleep with Peter?"
Ned barks out a laugh, but when she doesn't respond he turns to look at her again. "Oh come on, don't play dumb, it doesn't suit you." Michelle raises her eyebrows and he laughs again. "Are you trying to say you don't actually—oh my God. You don't know."
"Know what, Ned?"
Ned's smile fades away and he drops the pizza slice in favour of sitting beside her. He gently pries the blanket from around her face until he can see her clearly, and only when he has her full attention does he say, "You two are unequivocally, disgustingly, idiotically butt-crazy for each other."
"...Butt-crazy."
"That seems to be the adjective I went for and I stand by it."
