After Derek and the ████ merged, he was sure he would die. He had writhed on the ground, leaking blood out of every pore. His brain shocked with so much stimuli it scrambled, The rest of the knowledge seeping into his already full skull. He stayed like that until it was eventually too much, him passing out into what he predicted would be oblivion.
But he didnt.
Now Avery is making sure nothing ever happens to Derek again.

Summary
After preventing Avery from attempting to save his life by becoming Hastur's vessel, Derek cannot untangle himself from the violent web of self-hatred. Nor can he blame the thoughts in his mind wholly on Hastur.
Derek doesn’t want to be here or anywhere. He wants to not exist, and if he cannot do so, then he wants to be in so much pain that he finds some clarity in justifying his pathetic life. He wants Avery to be so angry at him that he leaves him behind forever and insists upon forging a life worth living for himself, where Derek is neither a memory nor a bad feeling. He wants to be alone until he dies.
Instead, Avery takes his silence as an invitation to lie next to him.

Derek countered by wrapping his arms around his waist, lifting him up with an effort before dropping him on the mattress. Rough fingers wrapped around the thin skin of Avery's wrists as he held them down on either side of the other man’s head. The impact made Avery and the bed squeak, the sound of the phone clattering down the floor was muted under Avery’s giggles.
