    “So,” Ilya says, dragging the word out. He’s swiping at non-existent crumbs on the counter, avoiding his eyes. “You have dinner at parents on Christmas, yes?” 

    “Yeah.” 

    Ilya nods. “I can house-sit while you are away. Make place pretty, if you have decorations. Make it less boring.” 

    Shane’s eyebrows fly up. “What? You don’t want to come with?” 

    Finally, Ilya looks up at him. Hesitantly, he asks, “You want me to come with?” 

    Frowning, Shane says, “I– yeah. Yeah, of course. You think I invited you here just so you could spend Christmas alone?” 

    Looking away, Ilya shrugs. “I am intruder here, Hollander. You have family. I do not. Makes situation… difficult, maybe. You forget the world thinks we are rivals.” 

    “Not difficult,” Shane says immediately. “You want to come, you’re coming.” 

    Or: Ilya's in Montreal alone during the week leading up to the Winter Classic. Shane doesn't let him spend Christmas alone.

    Ilya stared at her for a long moment. Yuna studied his face to try and figure out if he understood her, but this almost six year old already knew how to hide his emotions on his face better than most adults she knew.

    “Okey,” Ilya said and then he turned to face away from her.

    Yuna decided that was enough for today. Shane returned and Yuna watched as Ilya’s mask broke when he saw Shane. Ilya was smiling at Shane like he was the only star in Ilya’s sky.

    Ilya and Shane meet on the first day of kindergarden. Yuna feels motherly towards her son's new friend.

    He needs to move, maybe get Rozanov’s attention before he loses his nerves.

    And then the room tilts. His vision narrows, red light smearing into pink and white streaks. Shane staggers. The beer slips from his fingers. It shatters, foam splashing his shoes, glass skittering away. His knees give out like someone kicked him, and his hands shoot forward to hold himself upright.

    His left palm lands in broken glass, though he doesn't feel it. What he notices is the certainty that everyone sees, that they can smell him—something sour and wrong. His scent, despite patches and care, has turned exposed.

    OR: What if we took the club scene from episode 4 and had Shane collapse from experiencing Omega Rejection Syndrome after seeing Ilya dancing with someone else?

    “So…” [Ilya] murmurs, his voice casual, doing his best to hide the flicker of nerves tightening his gut. He’s always been better with his hands than with words, and part of him is convinced that if he hadn’t just left Shane a puddle, the answer would be different. He’s never been good at asking for things, not when it matters, “There’s this thing this weekend. Taste of Downtown Ottawa. Food, music, that sort of thing.”

    Shane’s fingers still against Ilya’s chest as he adjusts to look at him, “Okay…”

    Ilya nods, his fingers resuming their tracing on Shane’s skin.

    “I was thinking we could go and check it out.”

    Shane is quiet for a long moment, his breath warm against Ilya’s skin. Then, slowly, he nods.

    “Yeah,” he murmurs, “That sounds… nice.”

    Shane and Ilya have a cute, fluffy date night at a Taste of Downtown with Anya in tow.
