As Spencer walks out of the violent crimes seminar in Chicago, the steady hum of conversation fades behind him. He lets out a slow breath, adjusting the strap of his satchel, before the sharp sound of clapping interrupts his thoughts. It’s deliberate, slow, and familiar. The rhythm settles in his chest before his mind even catches up.
Then, a voice—smooth, velvety, laced with amusement—cuts through the air.
“Well, if it isn’t Doctor Reid.”
He stops. Completely freezes. His breath hitches as recognition slams into him. He knows that voice. He hasn’t heard it in over six years, but he could never forget it.
He turns sharply, his eyes wide, lips parting slightly in disbelief.
