He can’t quite convince the rest of himself of that.
Every breath he takes, he thinks he smells grass. Tastes the desperation of his own tears. There’s knees pressing into his back, strangling the air from his lungs. Hands holding him down, holding him still, sentencing him to his death—

Post-Hail Mary mission and now settled happily on Erid, Ryland starts getting nightmares about his last memories on Earth. He just wants them to stop. Luckily, he has Colt there to help.

Summary
This had been a long time coming.
It had been months since Grace pulled Simon from his artificial waters, bloody and half-insane. Months since he's nursed him back to health, met his feral bullshit with kindness, and informed him that whatever fucked up wormhole he'd popped out of led him to a universe full of stars and planets and an Earth light-years away.
Their caution of one another (though mostly on Simon's side) gradually morphed into respect. Not long after, it became attraction.
Today, their pining hit its breaking point.

“No!” Adrien stresses. They look incredibly distraught. “We all thought he was just this guy you had a massive crush on! We were making bets on when you’d finally ask him out!”
“Okay, well.” Colt blinks, shakes his head. One thing at a time. “First of all, he isn’t ‘just this guy.’ Secondly, I do have a massive crush on him. And third…” Colt smiles, slow and smug. He can’t help it. “You were making bets? You think I have a chance?”
Several people stare at Colt like he’s the most disturbing circus act they’ve ever seen.

It was Colt’s job to protect Ryland from the insidious whims of others. It was what would make him an Alpha, worthy. He was tough, and resilient. Ryland was soft. That was why Colt threw himself off of buildings and Ryland taught children about the moon.
