"How long?" Mydei asks. "Deliverer. How long?"

Now, Phainon's head snaps up. His lip curls, baring his teeth. "How long what?" he snarls. "How long since my rut started? How long will it last? Just what are you trying to ask, Mydeimos? How long since I've imprinted on you like some kind of—"

"Are you ashamed of it, then?" Mydei cuts him off, struggling to keep his scent from swelling. "Do you find your affections unnatural or repulsive? Or have I not done enough to prove myself to you as a worthy mate?"

    Summary

As a beta, Mydei pays little mind to the nonsense happenings between alphas and omegas. He cares little for their grievances over scenting rituals and grumblings over markings. However, with his people begrudgingly settled in Okhema, he is forced to confront them. Even worse, his people take particular issue with Phainon's presence around him, and insist for him to keep his distance.

But why is it so wrong for him to want a tenderness in his life he never once had?

“What’s going on here? New training exercises?” Phainon asked in half-jest as he surveyed the chariot race and spectators.

“Some friendly competitions in Strife’s honour. A Kremnos tradition.”

    “Competitions? Yet you’re not participating?”

“The host is responsible for overseeing the games and allocating the prizes.”

    “Well… what about me?”

    “What about you?”

He smiled so earnestly Mydei was torn between averting his gaze or doing something unwise to wipe it from his mouth. “May I participate? It’s so lively here. The rousing cheers, the spark of competition—I’ve been reeled in.”

Slowly, Mydei blinked and tilted his head but Phainon’s bright visage was unchanged.

Upon the anniversary of Castrum Kremnos’ fall at his own spear, in the shadow of Okhema’s high walls, Mydei hosts the annual funeral games—a celebration of glory and mourning bound up in Strife. It’s an old tradition frowned upon by the city the Kremnoan legion has come to unwillingly inhabit. But a necessary one.

This year, for the very first time, Phainon wishes to participate.

“Mydei?” Phainon tentatively began with the same caution he approached animals with a single glassy, scarred eye, crouching low in their line of sight and extending his hand for them to come towards him.

Unfortunately, Mydei was more stubborn than any stray cat and scoffed back. “What’s with that tone, Deliverer?”

There was no use circling the truth.

    “Can you see me?”

At that, Mydei’s stoic expression waned into a wry smile. “No.”

When Mydei is struck by a Cleaner’s poison while outside Okhema’s walls, the last thing to recover are his eyes. Until the poison is fully purged Phainon is designated as his aide.

    Summary

Phainon wakes bathed in sweat and with a raging hard-on and breathes out through his nose, settling his hands on his burning face, knowing exactly what it means. Swallowing around a mouthful of saliva, he rolls onto his front, blindly grabbing the teleslate that’s lying on his night stand.

He’s opened Mydei’s chat before he’s even blinked the sleep from his eyes.

All in all, not much had changed between the two – they were busy keeping Okhema safe, and the situation with Nikador was getting more dire by the day. New were fleeting touches here and there, kisses stolen when no one’s looking, sparring sessions becoming a bit more heated, sometimes ending with them rutting against each other, or Mydei leaning closer to him by the fireplace after battle. It was nice, something Phainon had gladly gotten used to.

They did not address the dromas in the room – well, until biology would force them to.

aka Phainon's rut, the fic (uh, anyone hear that ominous bell tolling?)

    “Nice throne.”

The corner of Mydei’s lip twitched into a smile. “Thanks.”

“It’s befitting of your status.” As a king. As a god. “But I can’t imagine it's very comfortable.”

    “Then your imagination is lacking.”

“Perhaps it's your design skills that are lacking. All aesthetic and no substance.”

“Criticisms on such matters from you sounds no different than a dog barking at his own reflection.”

“If you’re so certain, how about a demonstration?”

His brows raised in his confusion but settled again soon after with the realisation that Phainon had levelled his taunts, as he so often did when they were together, with intention. The rapid jabs and counters themselves were of far less importance than the outcome he had prodded them towards: Mydei seated upon his throne. He propped his elbow on the arm so he could comfortably lean his jaw against his knuckles and push his pelvis forwards, legs spread mouthwateringly wide.

    Phainon knelt at his feet.

It’s been months since Mydei departed for Castrum Kremnos to defend Okhema from the Black Tide. When he’s in need of supplies, Phainon finally has the opportunity to see him again.

Mydei can do nothing but blink at Phainon as he babbles, getting himself increasingly worked up over such a non-issue.

"Deliverer," Mydei calls quietly, and Phainon's mouth snaps shut with an audible click. He still isn't meeting Mydei's gaze. "Why are you panicking?"

"I cut you to the bone," Phainon says, jaw visibly tensing. He looks like he feels sick at the notion alone. "I injured you to this extent."

"Yeah. So?" Mydei tilts his head, brows furrowing.

"And?" He asks tiredly, manages to make a circle in the air with his hand before it flops back down to the ground uselessly. "I'm willing to bet anything that I've loved you since our first real meeting, even if I cannot recall it."

Mydei considers him carefully for a long moment. An unreadable look crosses his face before he shakes it off. "You are hopeless," he says quietly.

Phainon smiles, a smaller but no less genuine expression. Mydei's gaze snaps to his lips, and Phainon revels in the knowledge that his eyes haven't left him once, even after their battle ended. He hums happily. "Perhaps so."

    Summary

Hundreds of times over, he reaches for this mask, a million times over, he reaches for this mask. Sometimes he sees the face behind it. Sometimes he touches the face behind it. Sometimes, he dies before he can do either of those things. The world goes black a hundred times, the world goes black a million times. His back torn open, his body twisted into a god’s. It happened here. It happened here. It happened here.

He jerks away with a hiss. The reverberations linger, shards of a million lifetimes hanging in the air like an executioner’s blade. And at last, the swordmaster says, hoarse voice no more than a sigh:

    “My…deimos.”

Mydei stares at him for a moment, then reaches out for the third time, and this time he slides the mask gently off the swordmaster’s face.

    “...Phainon,” he breathes.

in the ruins of castrum kremnos, mydei finds a dying swordmaster in black and a million cycles of lost memories; the flame reaver receives one last memory of how it felt to be loved.

“Make your point,” the demigod cuts, impatience bleeding through his voice.

Again, Phainon thinks of the appreciative smiles Mydei freely gives the other Heirs, or his people, or the travelers beyond the sky; how he himself mostly gets frowned eyebrows and teasing smirks.

He’s not jealous, no. He just- Okay. Maybe he’s a little jealous. So he says, stupidly, because Mydei would never indulge now, battle-worn and still running high on adrenaline:

“I merely believe a 'Thank you' is in order.”

Mydeimos stares like Phainon has just grown a second head.

Perdikkas comes into view, stepping closer to blink down at Phainon and Mydei on the ground. “You’re all here?”

Ptolemy scoffs, kicking lightly at the dirt. “Guess who has the extraordinary pleasure of being assigned the babysitting duty to the dumbass trio over here?” He rolls his eyes with a sharp sigh. “Not Peucesta, clearly. Lucky bastard.”

“Don’t lump me in with them,” Hephaestion protests. Ridiculous. Everyone knows who instigates the fights just as often as Phainon and Mydei.

“We don’t need babysitting,” Phainon says at the same time, words muffled as Mydei’s hand smashes his head into the ground, resuming their fight now that Ptolemy is distracted. Phainon almost bites down on the dirt by accident.

“Lord Phainon has such a thick face,” Mydei hears in the Marmoreal Market one day.

He doesn’t turn, but he does tune out the hawking of the merchants some more to hone in on the conversation. Phainon is fairly fit, though, he ponders, half amused and half bemused, as he picks up a pomegranate. Surely if anything, his arms are thicker than his face?

Or, how Mydei tries to find something that makes Phainon blush.

“I think I evened the score a bit while you were out, you know,” Phainon calls over his shoulder.
Still no response from Mydei, only the sound of corrupted flesh tearing. Phainon supposes that in itself is response enough. He yanks his sword from the neck of his last opponent and stands, trying to catch his breath. Yet his uneasiness lingers still, rising thickly into his throat.
The hairs on the back of his neck rise as his instincts scream at him to move. Corruption surges towards him from behind, and he tightens his hand on the hilt of his sword once more, whirling on his attacker—
—and he stabs Mydei straight through the upper chest, just beneath his collarbone.

Phainon and Mydei investigate a village drowned by the black tide. When Mydei falls, something else gets back up.

    Summary

It was a cultural miscommunication. The product of a cultural difference. Phainon was certain of it. After all, Phainon had hardly been aware of the implications when he first arrived in Okhema. It wasn’t until he attended a class on Okheman theatre at the Grove and they were halfway through analysing a play script from Era Bellica that he was exposed to the symbolism for the first time.

The girl next to him had taken pity and timidly whispered the answer to his question.

Throwing apples was a ploy at seduction.

By the way Mydei happily crunched at the apple perfectly matched to the one he had thrown with every intention for Phainon to catch, and the lack of scandalised attention from the surrounding Kremnoans, tossing apples clearly did not carry the same meaning in Kremnos as it did in Okhema.

A cultural difference over apples leads to some self-inflicted torture on Phainon’s behalf. After all, if Mydei is ignorant to the symbolism then there’s no harm to Phainon indulging in a little fantasy.

“I’m sure he’ll come back soon!” Trianne had told him, patting his head. “He should’ve told you, De. Of course you’d badly miss him, you’re his best friend!”

“I’m going to rip his head off,” Mydei mutters under his breath. Wait. “What? I don’t miss him. Why would I miss him? We’re all Chrysos Heirs and I’m—we’re not even best friends. I’m sure it was something important, if he had to leave without telling me.”

He sees a flicker of pity in Trianne’s eyes. He groans. And fuck Phainon, wherever he is.

Or, Phainon disappears. Everyone thinks he misses him, for some reason.

“I love you,” Mydei blurts without preamble.

Phainon stops entirely. His eyes widen. Mydei’s hands twitch at his sides. He holds Phainon’s gaze, jaw clenched and body wound like a spring, watching Phainon swallow—Adam’s apple bobbing.

“What?” he breathes, the word cracking at the end.

    Mydei takes a deep breath.

“I love you,” he repeats. “I offer my body and soul to you—my equal in every way, the one worthy to stand beside me. Across thirty-three million cycles, my affections for you have never changed. If our old promises during every one of those cycles still continue to mean something to you as well, then I intend to honor them starting today—if you will let me.”
