You're not new to war, this was just another mission. A large one, full of teams you've worked with once or twice, but full of names you hardly know. The tightness of your thermal layers are uncomfortable, made worse with the friction of your looser uniform with every step. The static thats not really there is under your skin and in your veins. There's a tightness to your teams eyes as you get closer to your mark, none of you like taking orders from a place so high you can't gauge the necessity of your being there.
You wish you still had time to think slowly, as you run for your life. You and maybe twenty others have bolted East, weaving between tree's and avoiding the fire fight with trained ease. Too bad you jinxed it, again. The explosions are close and consecutive, you have all crossed some invisible line of landmines. The halt of all who were still standing was immediate, breathes held as the sudden silence cascades throughout the eery darkening trees.
These soldiers are trained, they inspect their teammates, retrieve the dead's dog tags and carry the wounded in rapid succession. The run continues, slower. You know you and your team will survive.

But those who get caught in the crossfire…” The little spirit tucked his hands in his sleeves and sighed. “Innocent lives shouldn’t have to pay the price of someone else’s decision to gamble their life against a cataclysmic foe. And that very foe shouldn’t drag in those same innocents to suffer when they’ve done nothing to draw his ire.”

There was little confusion regarding whom the boy was referring to.
